The Pony Express will ride again in June for annual re-enactment.

In addition to being able to see the riders along various parts of the trail — including Lake Tahoe — it’s possible to have a letter delivered this way.

Mail will be carried by horseback by more than 700 riders from St. Joseph, Mo., through Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California between June 15-25. This is the same number of days it took 155 years ago. Riders will come through the South Shore on their way to Sacramento.

On March 24, 1955, Sacramento City Councilman Clarence Azevedo addressed his City Council to extend an invitation to attend the Sportorama at the Memorial Auditorium to be held that May. Participating in Sportorama were several South Shore businesses which organized a booth at the event.

This was 10 years before the city of South Lake Tahoe was incorporated.

The grand door prize for visitors to that booth was an expense-paid weekend at Lake Tahoe, as detailed in this typewritten promotion page from 1955.

The often-mentioned Playland Motel later became the Highland Inn, just recently gutted and now being remodeled, next to Carrows Restaurant near the state line.

• NAMI El Dorado County is providing free monthly support group meetings in South Lake Tahoe starting June 9 at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Road, from 6-7:30pm. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will host several workshops for the real estate community regarding best management practices and an enhanced BMP disclosure form for real estate transactions.

TRPA requires people selling property to disclose the property’s BMP status to the purchaser prior to sale. The purchaser must submit a BMP disclosure form to TRPA within 30 days of sale. The new BMP disclosure form can be submitted to TRPA electronically.

These upcoming workshops offer an opportunity for real estate professionals to learn more about this new BMP disclosure form as well as other point of sale disclosure requirements and TRPA systems available for people to research property information online.

• Caltrans and Truckee will be having a groundbreaking ceremony for the Truckee Mousehole Pedestrian Tunnel on Highway 89 on April 2 at 1pm on the east side of the existing tunnel.

• Authentic San Francisco vibes wrap up the FNCTN Winter Music Series with dance music pioneer Gavin Hardkiss headlining the April 3 event at Xhale Lounge and the funky sounds of Nurelix at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course April 17. Doors open at 8pm and admission is $10.

California State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy are hosting a public workshop on the potential reconstruction of the public pier at Kings Beach State Recreation Area.

The workshop is April 1 from 6:30-8pm in the North Tahoe Event Center (8318 N. Lake Boulevard, Kings Beach).

The upgrades are being considered to increase accessibility for pedestrians and boaters on the pier, as well as offer more recreation opportunities at Kings Beach SRA.

Josette Lewis from the UC Davis World Food Center will be talking about Agriculture, Food & Nutrition from Local to Global on April 23. This date has changed, it had been scheduled for April 9.

Lewis is associate director of the World Food Center, which was launched in 2013.

What does it take to feed 9 billion people? How does our food system encourage California agriculture to remain globally competitive, while reducing poverty in low-income countries? How can we deliver healthier outcomes for malnourished communities in Asia and Africa, while reducing rising obesity rates around the world? A food system that meets growing global demand must lower our environmental footprint as well.

Delivering solutions that address the complexity of these trade-offs requires connecting partners from areas spanning scientific excellence, innovation, policy and industry.

A series of meetings are scheduled in the next month regarding the final environment impact report, environmental impact statement, and environmental assessment document for the proposed Highway 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project.

The Tahoe Transportation District and Federal Highway Administration-Central Federal Lands Highway Division are proposing improvements to resolve the existing traffic congestion at Y in Tahoe City and address the long-term structural integrity of Fanny Bridge.

The project site extends approximately 0.7 miles on Highway 28 and 0.6 miles on Highway 89.

• Earth Day will be celebrated April 25 from 10am-3pm at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe. Earth Day recognizes, celebrates, and promotes the region’s unique beauty, while educating the public about local environmental issues.
