Bruce Brown’s “On Any Sunday: Next Chapter” changed the face of motorcycling in America. It opened up the mainstream’s eyes to a variety of two-wheeled sports that millions are consumed by during their free time, away from the hustle and bustle of the rat race.

Even more so, his film inspired entire generations to get on a motorcycle.

Brown will present the film with a Q& A session on April 25.

• Warning from Caltrans: Winter driving conditions will return to the Sierra mountains April 5 through April 8. Snow levels are predicted to fall below 4,000 feet, with snow accumulations of up to 6 inches on Donner and Echo summits.

The Air Force Thunderbirds will be performing during the Aviation Round-up on Aug. 22-23 at the Minden Tahoe Airport.

The Thunderbirds squadron is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support officers, four civilians and more than 100 enlisted personnel performing in almost 30 job specialties. A Thunderbirds air demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, including
the ground show and air demonstration, lasts about 75 minutes.

Civilian aircraft will also be performing.

• After nearly four decades at Sugar Bowl Resort, Rob Kautz, the resort’s president and CEO, is retiring.

• Vail Resorts is buying Perisher Ski Resort in Australia for $136 million in cash. The deal represents Vail’s first purchase of an international resort, and is expected to close in the company’s July quarter.

• South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Training from April 6-10, 4-8pm. Must be at least 15, able to swim 300 yards continuously while demonstrating breathing control and rhythmic breathing, tread water for two minutes using legs only, and complete a timed event. • The Fields Advisory Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority will meet April 3 from 2-3pm at Lake Tahoe Unified School District, 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

William Cottrell, a doctor with Barton Osteoporosis and Bone Health, will be talking about Osteoporosis: Prevention & Treatment on April 16.

Cottrell will discuss:

• What is it? An introduction to bone biology.
• How do you diagnose osteoporosis?
• How is it treated? Nutrients and pharmaceuticals.

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team is hosting two workshops for local defensible space and tree removal contractors.

Contractors attending either training will be included on the 2015 Tree Removal and Defensible Space Contractor List provided to residents participating in defensible space grant programs, requesting tree removal permits, or receiving defensible space inspections.

• Gregory Bergner will retire from Barton Urgent Care & Family Practice on April 14. He has served as Barton’s chief of staff and is one of Barton’s board of directors. In 1981, Bergner opened Tahoe Family Physicians with Brooks Martin and Paul Rork.

• South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club Easter Egg Hunt at Lake Tahoe Community College Parking Lot 1 is April 3 at 10:30am. Parents will not be allowed to enter any designated hunt areas with their child. Bring a basket or sack to hold eggs.

• Heavenly Mountain Resort access is via the gondola or Stagecoach Express. At this time the resort is still planning to close April 19.

• Barton General Surgery is moving to 2158 Jean Ave. in South Lake Tahoe. The surgery office will be closed on April 3 and April 6.

There are more than 1,900 edible insect species on Earth. More than 2 billion people already include insects in their diets. So why don’t Americans?

Entomophagy – the practice of eating insects – will be the subject of a talk April 25 from 4-6pm at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno. Michelle Roberts, a cultural anthropologist from the UNR, will discuss insects and diet in Southeast Asia.

This will be followed by a bug tasting. The menu includes: crickets, bamboo worm pupae, black ant eggs, silkworm and grasshopper kebabs, chocolate-covered superworms, white chocolate ant wafers, and grain moth larvae poop tea to wash it all down.

Caltrans is putting on an open house April 1 from 6-8pm at South Tahoe High School in the Student Union Conference Rooms to educate people about the road improvement work on Highway 89 from the Y in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road north of Camp Richardson.

Caltrans staff will be on hand to answer questions about the project.

South Tahoe Public Utility District is putting on a series of informational meetings for people who are interested in reducing outdoor water use.

The district is hosting a meeting for landscapers interested in the Turf Buyback Program. All attendees will be placed on a list to be distributed to program participants. The meeting is April 29 at 6pm.

On May 6 at 6pm there will be a workshop about the Turf Buyback Program for homeowners. The district will provide information on the program, discuss the requirements in detail, and provide additional resources for how to reduce your water use.

Those two meetings are at 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

Learn how to maintain your landscape and reduce water use by improving water management and system efficiency. This workshop on June 5 from 7:30am-noon features indoor presentations and outdoor demonstrations by irrigation industry professionals.
