Bacon biscuits? Beach Ball Art? Selfies? These are just a tiny sampling of the ways you can quench your creativity and have some fun entering the El Dorado County Fair’s many competitions.
The theme of the June 18-21 fair is Hog Days of Summer.

There will be two meetings next week about the Active Transportation Plan being created for the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The first is April 14 from 5:30-7:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. The second workshop is April 16 from 5:30-7:30pm at Kings Beach Elementary School.
Spanish interpreters will be on hand, child care provided and free food.
There will be four stations that include drawing routes on maps, identifying intersection improvement locations, taking a survey, and choosing top priorities for goals and infrastructure types for biking and walking in Lake Tahoe. Short presentation will be given at 5:30pm and again at 6:30pm if desired.
Also, a community survey may be accessed online. The survey is open until June 30.

Smokey Bear and U.S. Forest Service crew members visited Jubilee Kids’ Academy in South Lake Tahoe on April 9 to teach preschool kids about campfire safety.
Illegal and unattended campfires cause more than 90 percent of wildfires in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Forest Service asks the public to be mindful of the current fire danger and help prevent human-caused wildfires by not building illegal campfires.

CASA in South Lake Tahoe needs volunteers to become a voice for children who are in the court system due to abuse or neglect.
The five-week pring training begins April 28 at Lake Tahoe Community College.
Currently, 22 Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers serve 31 children in South Lake Tahoe. There are 84 children from the South Lake Tahoe area waiting for an advocate.

The Nevada Division of State Lands is offering grants for projects that will preserve and restore the natural environment of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Approximately $350,000 generated from the purchase of Nevada Lake Tahoe license plates will be available. Proposals that include the implementation of construction projects listed on the TRPA five-year environmental improvement program will be favored.
Applications are due April 24 at 5pm in the State Lands Office, 901 South Stewart St., Suite 5003, Carson City. Grantees will be notified in June.

Dealing with drought — stewardship practices at Sierra-at-Tahoe is this topic of the April 15 Tahoe Talks Brown Bag lunch series.
John Rice, general manager of the ski resort, will share his experience and knowledge from a ski-industry career spanning 37 years. Rice has been a leader in the industry and has knowledge on a local, regional and national level.
The free talk is from noon-1:30pm in the Aspen Room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

• Zephyr Cove Tennis Club has revamped its website.
• Nevada has the fewest number of structurally deficient bridges of any state at 2 percent, according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.
• Louis Franklin has been hired as South Tahoe High School’s football coach and special education teacher.
• Base Camp Pizza in Heavenly Village is hosting its first Yappy Hour, with a portion of proceeds benefitting Animal Coalition of Tahoe. The April 8 fundraiser is from 5-8pm. Dogs are welcome on the patio, people without pets are welcome inside. ACT raises funds for a spay-neuter program and the Meyers animal shelter.
To celebrate Earth Day, the Lake Tahoe chapter of Slow Food will host a screening of the documentary film “Slow Food Story” at Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema in Tahoe City.
The film traces the roots of the Slow Food movement from 1986 in Italy to the global revolution to think differently about food, its makers and sustainability.
The screening will feature refreshments including local kombucha from Folk Brewing on tap and heirloom variety popcorn grown in the Sacramento Valley.
The film will be shown April 22 at 7pm. Cost is $10. Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema is at 475 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City.
• El Dorado County Supervisor Brian Veerkamp will be representing the board at future Meyers meetings because Supervisor Sue Novasel has a conflict of interest based on property ownership. Veerkamp is also the alternate for Novasel on the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board.
• The Douglas County Public Library in Minden will be honoring the contributions of its volunteers on April 16 from 2:30 to 4:30pm at the Minden Library.
• Caltrans is alerting motorists that Interstate 80 will be closed overnight in both directions in south Placer County as crews raise the Horseshoe Bar Road Overcrossing. Motorists can expect an eight-mile detour during the closure, scheduled to start at 11pm April 14 and ending at approximately 5am April 15. The interstate will close again from 11pm April 15 until about 5am April 16.
• The beach at Kings Beach made the list of top 10 Best U.S. Beaches for Families by Trip Advisor’s Family Vacation Critic.
• Truckee’s building counter is now a five-day a week operation from 7:30am-4pm.
