• Douglas County Manager Jim Nichols has been invited to attend the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs in Shenzhen, China, where he will have the chance to meet with numerous Chinese officials, business leaders and dignitaries. He is paying for the trip.

• Douglas County dispatch recently achieved its accreditation for emergency medical dispatch from the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch. Douglas County 911 is the first all-risk center in Nevada to achieve accreditation for medical dispatch.

• Truckee officials approved a new look and name for the town’s transit – Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit.

• On May 2 from 1-pm and 2:303:30pm is Young Chautauqua at Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St., Carson City. Young performers will bring historical characters to life: meet Osa Johnson, Robert Baden-Powell, John Muir, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, and Coco Chanel. The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with South Lake Tahoe is offering a workshop called How to Protect Your Brand and Your Bottom Line from Negative Buzz on May 13 from 9am to noon.

The goal of the workshop is to teach attendees how to protect the reputation of their businesses online. Workshop topics include why you should care about your Yelp and other social review site ratings, why negative reviews are a huge opportunity for your business, how to craft and manage a winning presence on social media sites, proven strategies for responding to reviews — good and bad alike – and free tools and resources for monitoring what people say about you online.

The workshop costs $20 for chamber members and $40 for non-members. The workshop will be at the chamber, 169 Highway 50, Stateline.

• The passage of Measure F for Lake Tahoe Community College requires the formation of a Citizen’s Oversight Committee to ensure all expenditures of public funds are in compliance with the bond language approved by voters in November 2014. • Sand Harbor boat ramp will not open this season because of the drought.

The Great Ski Race, which has been the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team’s bread and butter fundraiser, has been canceled three out of the last four years due to poor snow conditions.

While TNSAR’s annual operating costs are relatively modest, the team needs to find other sources of revenue in order to support its mission of saving lives.

Special Olympics Nevada, local law enforcement agencies, and Applebee’s Restaurants are teaming up to raise money for the nonprofit through tip-a-cop.

Officers will trade their handcuffs and badges for aprons and menus this month at Applebee’s in the region.

Applebee’s Restaurants for 11 years has helped raise more than $55,000 for Special Olympics Northern Nevada. Special Olympics Nevada is a free year-round sports training and competition program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. There are 3,000 athletes who compete in 20 competitions throughout the region in eight sports.

The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has partnered with locally owned D.A.F.F.Y skate company to introduce skateboarding to its members.

On April 8 D.A.F.F.Y ran a four-hour workshop teaching the boys and girls how to skateboard.

D.A.F.F.Y’s mission is to empower young people to find fun and enjoyment through skateboarding. For every skateboard sold, D.A.F.F.Y donates a board to a child in need.
