The Comstock History Center Museum is hosting a photo exhibit entitled Vanishing Icons: A Look Back at Comstock Mines and Mills.

In 1980, a documentation project was undertaken on the Comstock to record the remains of historic mine and mill sites originally built throughout Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City and Dayton during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The exhibit features 16 large-format, black and white photographs from this project.

As part of the Historic American Engineering Record, the project was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior and conducted by the National Park Service. It involved surveying, photographing and creating a written description for the structural remains of each mine or mill, including historical, operational and architectural data. Until now, these images have never been publicly displayed.

The Comstock History Center Museum is located at 20 N. E St. in Virginia City, two blocks downhill from the Bucket of Blood Saloon. Admission is free and the museum is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10am-4:30pm and Saturdays from 10am-5pm.

The Douglas County Public Library in Minden is sponsoring a special program called Organic Gardening with the Drought.

Craig Witt from Full Circle Compost will be the speaker April 28 at 5pm. He will give tips on how to have a successful garden when water is in short supply. Heirloom tomato plants will be available for a small donation.

Full Circle Compost manufactures organic compost, topsoil and mulches. It began as a manure management system and means of increasing crop production at the Milky Way Dairy Farm in Minden. Witt has become a leading expert in soil and composting science.

There will be an open house May 6 regarding the Meyers Area Plan.

El Dorado County Supervisor Brian Veerkamp, who is Meyers’ voice because Supervisor Sue Novasel has a conflict, will talk about the plan before the break-out sessions begin.

The board plans to have a workshop in June or July to discuss initiating environmental review of the draft plan.

The meeting will be from 5:30-7:30pm at the magnet school in Meyers.

When you leave your children in the care of a babysitter, take time to cue the babysitter to your family’s escape plan. Discuss the floor plan of your house, and leave the phone number where you can be reached. Explain the family fire safety plans to your babysitter.

If the smoke detector sounds, nobody should try to find the fire, much less try to put it out.

Make it clear that your only concern is that everyone gets out of the house quickly and safely.

• Senate Bill 605, which would establish a good neighbor tuition policy with students in Nevada, passed out of the California Senate Committee on Education with unanimous, bipartisan support on April 22 and is now on its way to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

• An opening day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex on April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9am with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance.

• At each stage of the 2015 Amgen Tour of California there will be a Lifestyle Festival adjacent to the finish line. The daylong festival will feature cycling products and demos, cancer awareness education, family activities, food, entertainment and more. The Douglas County School District board of trustees is looking for input into the selection of the next superintendent. Lisa Noonan announced her retirement earlier this year.

Meetings will take place May 4 at 4:45pm at Carson Valley Middle School multipurpose room and May 6 at 4:15pm at Zephyr Cove Elementary School multipurpose room.

Wilderness Medicine Explored is the topic of Khristy Gavigan and Lauren Hansen’s lecture.

The two Barton Health employees will talk about practical techniques to recognize and treat an injured person in the wilderness. There will be hands-on case scenarios and review of minimum safety essentials. Attendees are encouraged to bring a backpack fully packed and ready for an adventure.

The talk is May 6, 6-7pm in the board room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Choices for Children is hosting a Mother’s Day diaper drive to benefit the Healthy Bottom Line diapers and wipes distribution program.

Diapers contributed during this drive will go to families in need. Many families in town have trouble making ends meet and being able to get an emergency supply of diapers once every three months can help stretch tight budgets.

The diaper drive is from May 1-15. There are donation bins at: The El Dorado County Library, Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Under the Magic Pine Tree, South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center/Pool Complex, Lake Tahoe Airport, Bright Beginnings Inc., Tahoe Parents Nursery School, Tahoe Tot Spot, Tahoe Montessori School, First Baptist Church, and the LTCC Child Development Center. Any size diapers may be contributed.
