Liberty Utilities has awarded scholarships to area high school and community college students.

The recipients are:

South Tahoe High School – Priya Patel

Loyalton High School – Cheyenne Little

Coleville High School – Joel Gomez

North Tahoe High School – Johanna Gur

Portola High School – Saul Juarez

Truckee High School – Aaron Kuyper

Lake Tahoe Community College – Antonio Benitez.

Each high school senior will receive a $500, and the community college student will receive $750.  A Liberty Utility representative attends each of the school’s awards ceremony to congratulate the student and present the check.

Two stretches of Highway 28 in North Lake Tahoe will be repaved starting next week.

The work includes a five-mile section from Sierra Terrace Road in Tahoe City to Carnelian Bay and a half-mile stretch east of Kings Beach to the Nevada state line.

Work is scheduled from 6pm-6am Sunday through Friday and should be completed by the end of July. However, unexpected weather or other events could extend the project. The work will be performed under one-way traffic control with delays up to 10 minutes in each direction.

The construction contract was awarded to VSS International, Inc., with a low bid of $815,375.

·       South Tahoe Public Utility District’s board is expected to vote June 18 on an ordinance that would change elections to be at-large. If it passes, the change would be effective for the 2016 elections.

·       The High Fives Foundation awarded 25-year-old Jeff Andrews an Empowerment Grant to help aid in his recovery from a snowboarding accident resulting in quadriplegia. The money allows Andrews and his trainer Jack Powell rehab at the CR Johnson Healing Center in Truckee.

·       Magic Dan will be at the South Lake Tahoe Library on July 17 at 2pm for a free magic show with a message that enhances and reinforces education, reading and self-esteem. The library is at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·      South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center is conducting a tamale fundraiser. Call 530.542.0740 or email dhooper@tahoefrc.org to order the chicken, cheese or pork tamales. The deadline in June 10. They are $20 per dozen.

For people who have a valid ADA placard, special arrangements are necessary to reach the Vikingsholm area.

Call 530.525.9529 to check on the availability of the shuttle service that escorts people with mobility disabilities to the historic home and beach area. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance, and a $10 parking fee is charged.

This service is offered during the Vikingsholm tour season, which is now until September.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is making a concerted effort to better interact with the public outside of detaining individuals.

There will be an open house June 11 from 3-7pm at the department, 1352 Johnson Blvd. There will be a variety of police equipment and vehicles on-hand. The goal is to promote transparency and have the community meet with police officers and unsworn staff.

Coffee with a cop will be every Thursday this summer from 8-10am at the Starbucks in the Village Center. Sergeants and above will be engaging the public.

A wildfire evacuation drill involving Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and Skyland Fire Adapted Community will take place June 8 from 10am-2pm.

The drill will give residents the opportunity to practice evacuating from their homes and getting to the designated safe zone.

The event will begin with an all agency briefing then Douglas County sheriff’s deputies drive each street in Skyland giving evacuation instructions on a bullhorn. Residents will be directed to Zephyr Cove Park where an evacuation center will set up for registration.

The drill will serve to remind all residents that in the event of a wildfire, if the situation permits, they should make certain all windows and doors are tightly closed to keep embers out, turn on all lights so firefighters can see inside your home, close all interior doors, remove lightweight curtains and drapes as they may catch fire from radiated heat, put all flammable furniture inside the home, and open the gates to fences to create a firebreak.

The last evacuation drill was in 2012 with the Zephyr Knolls and Zephyr Heights neighborhoods.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, Douglas County Search and Rescue, Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County Community Emergency Response Team, U.S. Forest Service, South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, East Fork Fire District, Douglas County Emergency Management, Southwest Gas, NV Energy and the Humane Society will also participate in the drill.

·  There will be a free bike tune up workshop on June 6 from 11am-1pm at Crow’s Auto Care and Bike Repair, 931 3rd St., South Lake Tahoe. All ages are welcome.

·  People may dump their electronic waste for free on June 6 and June 7 from 9am-3pm at South Tahoe Middle School.

Public comments are being taken on draft Tahoe Basin Area Plan and Notice of Preparation of a draft environmental impact report/environmental impact study for the proposed Tahoe Basin Area Plan and Tahoe City Lodge pilot project.

· TRYP’s next professional development workshop is a kid-friendly presentation about the effects of climate change on Lake Tahoe. It is June 17 from 6-7pm at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (1100 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe). The workshop is free for TRYP members and $5 for non-members.

· FNCTN is partnering with Tahoe Blue Vodka and Steamers Bar & Grill to produce the Triple Crown of Bartending. This series will test the skills of Lake Tahoe’s top bartenders while raising money for the League to Save Lake Tahoe. The first event is June 28 from noon-4pm with a bloody Mary competition featuring live music from Ike & Martin. It is free to attend, with drink specials including $10 for 10 tastings.

· The Robert and Lois C. Braddock Charitable Foundation has given the League to Save Lake Tahoe $10,000 to support its land-use planning program.

· Cristi Nelson is running for the California’s 6th Assembly District. She wants to replace the termed-out Beth Gaines in the district that covers portions of El Dorado, Placer and Sacramento counties.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe on June 3 awarded $21,500 in scholarships to local students.
