There will be an open house at the South Lake Tahoe Services Center on July 10.

This is part of the city’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The free event is from 2-5pm at 1052 Tata Lane.

The Services Center includes the city’s Planning, Building, Public Works, Capital Improvement, Engineering, and Streets/Snow Removal departments.

There will be displays of past projects and a chance to look at upcoming projects.

Friends of the Library’s summer book sale is July 25.

It is from 10am-3pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 100 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Members get access at 9am. It’s possible to join that morning.

There will be a free music on the lawn at the library from noon-2pm.

In May 2014, the California Tahoe Conservancy purchased three commercial lots in South Lake Tahoe, namely the South Y Lodge on Emerald Bay Road, the lakefront two-story Alta Mira building adjacent to Lakeview Commons, and the property on Highway 50 near 4th Street occupied by the Smoke Shop and Tahoe Psychic.

As reported in Lake Tahoe News, “… The goal for all three (lots) is to tear down the existing structures and improve the land, while also giving the public access.”

The single-story building and the A-frame behind it on Highway 50 near 4th Street stood on less than one-half acre, but it is a stream environment zone which the CTC intends to protect.

These two buildings have housed many different kinds of businesses over the years, such as the earlier doughnut shop pictured.

The A-frame in back housed a used merchandise and consignment business and finally become the Smoke Shop, and Tahoe Psychic lastly had the front building. As LTN observed, “…the psychic owners in the front building must have been clairvoyant when they signed a three-year lease with the current owner the day before the Conservancy began negotiations.”

·       Construction on the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail will begin July 6. This segment is about a one-half mile between Herbert Avenue and Glenwood Way in South Lake Tahoe. It should be done by August.

·       The Nevada Department of Public Safety-Division of Parole and Probation is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

·      ​The 14th annual Art, Wine and Music Festival returns to the Village at Squaw July 11-12 ​starting at 11am. The festival is free to the public and wine tastings are $25. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the local nonprofit Disabled Sports USA Far West.

·       Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care night at the Reno Aces baseball game is July 22. Game starts at 7:05pm against the Albuquerque Isotopes. If at least 200 of the $12 right field bleacher tickets are sold, LTWC will receive a donation of 50 percent of those sales from the Reno Aces.

The Fourth of July parade in South Lake Tahoe starts at 10am at the recreation center on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

It will go down Highway 50 to Cardinale Way’s parking lot.

There are more than 30 entries.

The grand marshal is John Filas, a World War II vet who served in Marine Corp.

Nevada Highway Patrol will be setting up a DUI checkpoint in Douglas County at Lake Tahoe during the Fourth of July holiday.

The exact location on Highway 50 has not been disclosed.

This event is being funded by a Joining Forces grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.

In addition to the checkpoint, additional officers will be patrolling the area roadways throughout the weekend to further protect pedestrians and other motorists from impaired drivers.

·      The official ground breaking ceremony for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care’s new home will be July 16 at 3pm at 1551 Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

·      Brad Gustafson hit a hole in one on the second hole at Bijou Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

·      Vacation rentals will be on the July 21 South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda.

·       Tahoe Environmental Research Center, which operates four research buoys with NASA-JPL, recently replaced two of them. These buoys collect data that help check the accuracy of satellite information, provide instantaneous weather data, and even measure the dust and nutrients that fall out of the air and onto the lake.

Sugar Pine Point become a California State Park 50 years ago.

To celebrate, this year’s annual Living History Day on July 25 will be a 50th birthday bash for the park with a day filled with free family friendly events ranging from live ’60s music to a children’s activity zone. The historic Hellman-Ehrman Estate will come alive from 11am-4pm.

Living history activities will include family lawn games, open house tours, children’s activity zone, music, a car and boat show, an art exhibit, birthday cake, and an auction. Refreshments will be available for purchase. All events are free, though there is a $10 parking fee.

Starting on July 7, in person dog licenses will only be issued at the Truckee Animal Shelter Tuesday through Friday from 10am-2pm.

The shelter is located at 10961 Stevens Lane, Truckee.

There are three additional ways to pay. One is to renew your dog’s license online with a Visa or MasterCard. The rabies vaccination must be current and/or be provided by fax or email the same day that the online payment is made. You may also renew by mail by making the check payable to Town of Truckee and send payment to 10961 Stevens Lane, Truckee, CA  96161. Be sure to enclose a copy of your dog’s rabies vaccination certificate if it is required. Or renew by credit card over the phone at 530.582.2450 during the above-mentioned hours.

·      Lake Tahoe Community College President Kindred Murillo was just given a raise. She now makes $185,000 a year, whereas until July 1 her salary was $165,000. With benefits she makes $204,400 a year.

·      Truckee’s Fourth of July parade this year starts at the intersection of Frates Lane and Donner Pass Road. The parade will be from about 10am-noon.

·       Caltrans will have occasional overnight lane closures of Interstate 80 in Placer County as part of the Canyon Way/Placer Hills Road overcrossing project.

·       All recreation facilities in the Eldorado National Forest are open except for Stumpy Meadows, Black Oak, and Big Meadows campgrounds, which were damaged in the King Fire last year.

·       California’s excise tax on gasoline decreased by 6 cents per gallon, from 36 cents to 30 cents per gallon, as of July 1.
