·       Kenneth Pogue, 47, of Shingle Springs has been appointed undersecretary of administration and offender services at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, where he has served as assistant secretary in the Office of Legislation since 2013.

The 2015-16 El Dorado County Grand Jury began work this month on a yearlong process to investigate various issues in the county.

The jury is tasked with investigating civil matters in the county. However, it has no real authority other than to write a report each other – good or bad – about the people or entities involved. The subjects of the reports then write back saying what they might do to correct the allegations.

Six members of the 2015-16 El Dorado County Grand Jury served on last year’s panel. They are Richard Coffin, James Kern, Peter Marty, Jeanne Ott, Thomas Simpson and Colleen Young.

The other members include: Kenneth Cater, Hal Erpenbeck, Dan Kelly, Thomas Orth, Roger Pickler, Rodney Pimental, Debbie Rice, Julie Ryan, Jan Sawyer, George Turnboo, Richard White, Gatha Willyard, and Laura Anne Winston. Cater is the foreman.

Superior Court Judge Dylan Sullivan will be overseeing this jury, her first year to do so.

Lake Tahoe Community College art instructor Phyllis Shafer is leading a trip to Florence in October 2016, where students can appreciate some of the most famous artworks ever created, with expertise and insight provided by one of the best-known Western artists working today.

The public is invited to a trip kickoff meeting and slideshow hosted by Shafer on July 23 at 6pm in LTCC’s board room to learn more about the experience.

“The Art of Florence” class trip is scheduled for Oct. 10-18, 2016. Students who register for this trip by Aug. 1 will save $200, bringing the cost to $4,385.

Children entering kindergarten in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District in August need to be registered at their local school.

To be eligible for enrollment a child must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2015. Children born Sept. 2-30 or in October or November and will be 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2015, qualify for transitional kindergarten.

California law requires:

·      Child’s birth certificate.

·      Proof of immunization, which includes the Varicella (Chicken Pox), Hepatitis B and for most children, the last booster shot. Children will not be enrolled in school without presenting an up-to-date immunization record.

·      A health examination upon entry to school.

·      Oral health examination upon entry to school. Dental examinations that have occurred in the last 12 months meet this requirement.

·      Proof of California residency.

BloodSource will have a blood drive in South Lake Tahoe on July 31.

The new location will be at the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Center at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. Walk-ins are welcome.

BloodSource will donate a pound of pet food to the Lake Tahoe Humane Society for every pint of blood donated.

Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be 17 years old (16 year olds need a signed BloodSource parental consent form) and be generally healthy. There is no upper age limit for blood donations. Donors must bring a photo ID and should drink plenty of fluids before donating.

·      Residents of the North Tahoe Public Utility District reduced residential water consumption by 24.9 percent compared to June 2013 usage. NTPUD June 2013 usage was 176.3 residential gallons per capita per day, 181.9 residential gallons per capital per day in 2014 and 132.4 residential gallons per capita per day in 2015.

The second of three summer events to raise money for repairs at Vikingsholm is July 30.

Conversation with History is an opportunity to tour part of the castle at Emerald Bay State Park that is usually off limits and to talk with Helen Smith. Smith resided at the castle during the summers when she was a child.
