Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra’s annual fundraising event, Elegant Evening, is April 21 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

Soul Experience featuring Trey Stone will provide the music as guests taste wine, beer and vodka.

All money raised benefits education and service opportunities for women and youth on the South Shore.

·      On March 30 at 11am there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for El Dorado County’s state-of-the-art public safety facility. The ceremony will be at 200 Industrial Drive in Placerville, and will last approximately 30 minutes.

·      Morgan Heritage & Fiji, plus Maoli & Nomad and Ambassador DJs will be at Blu Nightclub at MontBleu in Stateline on April 21. Doors open at 9pm. Must be 21 or older. Tickets are $25.

·      Rapper, actor and producer Pitbull will be at Harveys on July 13 at 8pm.

·      Special Olympics Northern California and Nevada raised approximately $185,000 at the polar plunge this month in Zephyr Cove.

·      Plans to change the historic landscape of Placerville around the Druid Monument, now called the Clay Street Hangtown Creek Bridge Replacement Project, will be the focus of a Placerville open house set for 6pm April 4 at Town Hall, 549 Main St. in Placerville.

The Minden Soaring Club awarded five scholarships to youth to help finance flight and ground instruction in preparation for obtaining a private or other glider rating.

Each of the $1,000 checks was awarded to youths who demonstrated they are interested in learning to fly gliders and/or who have already begun their training and need additional monetary assistance.  

Scholarship winners are: Ryan Holcomb of Carson City; Joshua Nord of Gardnerville; Ari Erickson of Carson City; Emily Hillman of Gardnerville; and Ivan Altunin of Incline Village. 

Glider pilots must go through the same certification procedures as powered airplane pilots, and with proper training, a pilot can solo a glider by age 14 and obtain their private pilot glider rating by age 16.

·      South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting a training class on March 31, noon-1:30pm on bleeding control. It will include instruction for the layperson on how to control bleeding to save a life. ·      Big Blue Adventure Half Marathon and 8 Miler will be June 10. The start and finish lines are at the Village at Squaw Valley. Go online to register.

·      Meeks Bay Marina will not open this year. The U.S. Forest Service is conducting an environmental analysis to assist in developing a proposal to improve water quality at the marina. Public scoping on a proposed action is anticipated to begin this summer.

·      Diamond Peak ski resort will host an Easter egg hunt April 1 as soon as the lifts open at 9am. Participants must have a lift ticket. Eggs will be all over the mountain.

·      On March 25 from 6-9pm there will be a thank you party for Nancy Kerry at Outpost Brewing, 932 Stateline Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

·      Lucky Beaver Bar & Burger presented the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows with a $5,000 donation to support before and after-school programming at the organization’s 22 sites throughout the Truckee Meadows.

·      America’s Run for the Fallen is a nationwide relay run in tribute to every military member who has died while serving or as a result of serving during the War on Terror, since Oct. 12, 2000. It will be from April 7-Aug. 5. Tim Smith from South Lake Tahoe died in the war. For more info, go online.

·      On May 5 at noon author Sue Owens Wright will give a free talk at the South Lake Tahoe Library. She will present the fifth book in her Beanie and Cruiser mystery series, “Ears for Murder.”

·      Vicki Moore has resigned as Douglas County chief financial officer effective March 20. She started the job April 24, 2017.

·      The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival at the Village at Squaw Valley will be April 21 from 11am-5pm.

·      Author and photographer Tim Palmer will present a free slideshow on the 50th year anniversary of the Wild and Science Act on April 27 from 10am-noon. He will be at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, room 139/141.

·       Alborosie & Shengen Clan, plus JRas & The Higher Elevation and Two Peace with disc jockey Slee & Conscious Cru will be at Blu Nightclub at MontBleu in Stateline on April 20. Doors open at 9pm. Must be at least 21 to attend. Tickets are $25.

·      Opening night at the Boathouse Theater on the South Shore will feature Little Faith on June 22 at 7:30pm. This R&B, soul and Gospel collective is expected to sell out. Tickets will be available starting April 1 online.

·      The free Science Expo Family Night is April 5, 4:30-6:30pm at Lake Tahoe Community College. There will be hands-on science investigations, experiments, and demonstrations for all ages. This year’s activities focus on life science, health and nutrition.

·      Greater Nevada Mortgage, serving the Sierra Nevada region since 2001, has received the 2017 International Service Excellence Award in the Small Business category by the Customer Service Institute of America.

·      Nevada Highway Patrol has a pedestrian safety campaign going on now through March 31. Law enforcement team statewide will be issuing citations to pedestrians and motorists who are breaking traffic safety laws.

·      Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is making a planner available one day a week in Incline Village to accept and review permit applications to ensure projects in the Washoe County portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin comply with TRPA regulations. ·      The $5,000 grant from the Lahontan Community Fund has aided the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe to adopt out the healthiest pets possible. The money allowed HSTT to achieve its goal of disease testing, medically treating, vaccinating and performing sterilization surgeries on every pet that is stray, abandoned or relinquished within our community.

·      Bertheria Grady, 55, of El Dorado Hills has been appointed chief deputy director of the California Office of Tax Appeals.

Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness program in South Lake Tahoe is open to qualified low-income homeowners. 

Volunteer teams work to improve the condition of homes by providing minor exterior repairs, painting, and completing yard clean-up at minimum or no cost to homeowners who are unable to complete the work on their own.

The nonprofit is accepting applications for the 2018 summer project season. Applications are available online. The application deadline is April 15.

Truckee will be implementing expanded Dial-a-Ride services beginning March 18.

The new Sunday service is fully funded by an FTA Section 5310 Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities Program grant on a three-year pilot. This service is available to area seniors, persons with disabilities, and the general public. 

Similar to Saturday Dial-a-Ride, the Sunday service will operate from 9am to 5pm with reservations required by 5pm on Friday. The Sunday Dial-a-Ride will provide service into all neighborhoods and commercial areas within Truckee and can be used for any reason (work, shopping, church, dining, visit friends/family, recreation, etc.).

The one-way fare for adults is $6 and $2 for a senior, person with a disability, or child under the age of 12, or a multi-ride punch pass can be purchased for $20.
