South Lake Tahoe’s permit center at Tata Lane is expanding hours to improve customer service.

Beginning Aug. 17 the center will be open 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday, with no closures during the day.

The city has seen a substantial increase in the number of requests for service and submission of permits due to an increase in construction activity. In addition, with the changes to vacation home rental permits and code requirements for single room occupancy motels there will be an increase in the number of community members needing assistance.

The city will also be redesigning the center next spring to create a more user-friendly lobby, develop methods and opportunities for self-submission of minor permits, and invest in technology and staffing to expedite and improve the permitting process.

The center is located at 1052 Tata Lane.

A “Then and Now” in 2013 looked at how the Tahoe Valley Y”intersection evolved. Just recently, I came upon a detailed aerial photo, perhaps 1949, which includes labels on early landmarks around the Y. None of which exists today.

Nevada Lumber and the schoolhouse were gone before 1960. They were near today’s sites of Tahoe Valley Pharmacy and TJ Maxx. Lampson’s Market and the gas stations remained when the Y”intersection became a four-way in the early 1960s.

The Geeks are in Charge: Big Data, Autonomous Vehicles and the Sharing Economy is the subject of a webinar and discussion on Aug. 19.

·     The national fire preparedness level has been raised to its highest point, PL-5, for the first time since 2013. This designation permits further assistance from the military and international resources. The latest report places the total burn damage across the West at more than 6.4 million acres this season.

·      Tahoe Regional Young Professionals is hosting a mixer Aug. 18 from 6-9pm at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay. It is free for members and $10 for non-members and includes one drink and appetizers.
