Mommy and Me is a new support support group offered through Barton University.

New mothers and their babies (up to the age of 1 year) are invited to attend a weekly support group to share experiences and discuss the joys and challenges of parenting, and get support from other mothers as well as professional support from a childbirth instructor and guest speakers.

Speakers and topics will vary week to week.

The sessions begin Sept. 22 and will be weekly from 10am-noon at 1077B 4th St., South Lake Tahoe.

August is the deadliest month to be traveling on Interstate 80, with the five-year average being 92 deaths across the nation.

Nevada will be joining forces with all other states that Interstate 80 runs through from California to New Jersey in an attempt to curb motorists and drivers of large trucks and buses who engage in risky driving behavior such as speeding, driving while impaired and not using their seatbelt.

Nevada and the 10 other states participating in this event hope the extra presence on I-80 will foster safe driving habits resulting in a reduction of excessive speeds, distracted and impaired driving.

The extra enforcement will be out Aug. 28-30.

A Brush with Kindness — a program under Habitat for Humanity — is looking to help homeowners.

The group will paint the outside of houses, do minor exterior repair, and basic yard clean-landscaping.

Homeowners must meet certain income requirements to qualify for the assistance.

South Lake Tahoe is celebrating its 50th anniversary by taking a “birthday photo” on Aug. 27 at 6pm at Lakeview Commons.

Tahoe Production House will be flying a drone to capture the group.

This will all be during the final Live at Lakeview summer concert series. Lavish Green will be playing.

·      Fall Fish Fest at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center on the South Shore is Oct. 3-4.

The Meyers Area Plan is one of the key issues that will be discussed Aug. 31 when the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has its annual Tahoe meeting.

The meeting agenda has not been released. It must be posted 72 hours before the 2pm meeting. The agenda will be online.

The meeting will be at Lake Tahoe Airport.

It is anticipated the area plan will be heard about 3pm. Documents about it are available now online. The plan has a website.

Tahoe Turning Point is putting on a charity golf tournament Sept. 17 at Lake Tahoe Golf Course in Meyers.

The nonprofit has five residential group homes for youth ages 13-18, counseling services for children, adults and families, as well as transitional housing programs for foster youth.

For $125 players will receive a round of golf, breakfast buffet, on course lunch, barbecue after playing, and awards. Registration and breakfast start at 8:30am, shotgun start at 10am, and awards party at 3pm.

The replacement of  T8 fluorescent lighting with state of the art high efficiency LED T8 tubes has saved Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School thousands of dollars.

An energy savings rebate check issued by Liberty Utilities in the amount of $4,083 will be presented to LTESMS and its PTA on Aug. 25 at the Lake Tahoe Unified School District meeting.

The school district, the school PTA, and Liberty Utilities collaborated in the replacement program last school year. The PTA donated approximately $7,000 to buy energy-saving LED tube lights for the school. Eric Voelker, district electrician, and the LTUSD maintenance staff, retrofitted every classroom with the environmentally healthier lights.

The lights have an expected life expectancy of 10 years.

Liberty Utilities estimates $3,000 in future annual energy cost savings.

The school board meeting starts at 5pm at the district office on Al Tahoe Boulevard.

South Lake Tahoe is coordinating on an interactive History Hunt Week that will help people learn about the city’s 50-year history by following clues and answer historical questions.

The hunt goes through Aug. 29. History Hunt Maps are available at the following city buildings:
