·       The BBC will be filming the Sugar Pine Foundation’s sugar pine cone collections for the “Wild West” series. Filming will occur Sept. 10-14 at Sugar Pine Point State Park and Secret Harbor.

·       Senate Bill 168, which would protect forests, property and the lives of citizens, firefighters and emergency personnel from drone interference, passed out of the Senate and is now headed to the Assembly. It is authored by state Sen. Ted Gaines, R-El Dorado.

·       U.S. Forest Service firefighters have responded to 1,361 fires this year that have burned 335,875 acres of national forest in California.

·       Here are the El Dorado-Tahoe and Sierra roadwork schedules from Caltrans for the week.

·       El Dorado County is ranked in the top 2 percent of U.S. counties for the number of natural amenities, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

·       Tahoe Donner’s Fall Festival is Oct. 10 from 11am-5pm at the Northwoods Clubhouse. There will be seasonal beer, barbecue, arts and crafts vendors, doggie dip contest at the pool, and a kids’ carnival area with food, pumpkin carving, face painting and more. Live entertainment will include a magic show by Penny the Clown and local bands. There will be a pumpkin patch, petting zoo and maze. For more info, go online.

·       Beginning Sept. 1, the Douglas County Animal Shelter will adjust its office hours to: Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and closed from noon-1pm.

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month.

During the month, the South Lake Tahoe Library is encouraging people to showing their existing library card or sign up for a new one in order to be entered in a drawing.

Elementary school students who use their cards or sign up for one during September will be entered into a drawing for a Jamba Juice Party for their class and $75 for their teacher to use on classroom supplies.

Teens and adults who sign up for a card or use their existing card will be entered into a drawing for Jamba Juice gift cards.

·       Here is the agenda for the Aug. 31 El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting in South Lake Tahoe.

·       Sawmill Road in El Dorado County was supposed to open this week. However, utility conflicts have led to unforeseen delays, according to officials. No date has been set for when it will reopen. The bike path should be open in early October.

·       The School of the Arts at UNR has more than 35 events that are open to the public for the 2015 fall semester. Details are online. 

·       Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is launching the Athlete Committed program to support athletes, coaches and parents. It is designed to optimize athletic performance and health and wellness by educating coaches and athletes on the impact of nutrition, sleep, character, stress and chemical health.

·        Can Do Multiple Sclerosis is the beneficiary of the 27th annual Alpen Wine Fest at the Village at Squaw Valley on Sept. 6 from 2-5pm. Entry into the event is $40 in advance or $50 that day.

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program is looking for volunteers.

Current volunteer needs include:

Drivers — are needed to deliver meals one day each week from 10:30am to 12:30pm to homebound adults in Placerville, Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, and the Georgetown Divide, and especially in South Lake Tahoe.

Kitchen volunteers — are needed to help with lunch service, set-up and clean-up at the El Dorado Hills Senior Center at 990 Lassen Lane.

The California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service are hosting two open houses to present a land exchange concept that they say would help both agencies better manage their holdings in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The proposal would transfer Forest Service urban lots to the California Tahoe Conservancy, while conveying some larger CTC parcels to the Forest Service.

The South Shore open house is Sept. 9 from 5-7pm at the Forest Supervisor’s office, 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe City open house is Sept. 10 from 5-7pm at the Tahoe City Public Utility District’s Lakeview Room, 221 Fairview Drive.

There will be no formal presentation. Staff members from both agencies will be available to explain the proposal and answer questions.

Under the proposal, the Forest Service and CTC would exchange 1,961 acres. The Forest Service has stipulated that the lots remain open space and that the state agency cannot sell them.

As part of an effort to begin a countywide strategic planning initiative to formulate a long term sustainable broadband strategy, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors is planning a workshop to examine the state of broadband service in the county and its impacts on businesses and residents.

The workshop is Sept. 1 at 5pm at 330 Fair Lane in Placerville.

Participating in the workshop will be representatives from Valley Vision, Tahoe Prosperity Center, and the Sierra Economic Development Corporation. Key to this discussion will be an analysis to determine what Internet service is currently available and where there are gaps, to identify related community goals and ultimately, to produce a strategic roadmap of how to best close gaps in service and achieve community objectives.

·      Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District’s board is meeting Aug. 27 at 6pm at the park. Dogs and motorized boats are on the agenda.

·      Barton Health and Lake Tahoe Community College have collaborated to provide Fit Program for the community to get fit and stay fit. For more info, go online.

·       Kenneth Spielvogel from Barton Women’s Health will discuss identifying gynecologic malignancies, the latest screening tools and technology to identify cancer on Sept. 2 from 6-7pm at Lake Tahoe Community College. The talk is free.
