Lake Valley firefighters will demonstrate how two similarly furnished rooms — one protected with fire sprinklers and the other without fire sprinklers — often have very different outcomes.

The demo will be during Fire Fest on Sept. 26 (10am-3pm) at Lake Tahoe Airport. Officials said people will see firsthand how quickly a fire can become deadly versus the quick response and effectiveness of a fire sprinkler system in controlling or extinguishing a fire.

Lake Valley was awarded a $1,000 stipend from the national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition to increase its home fire sprinkler education  by conducting a live, side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration.

Entrepreneurs Assembly, an award-winning mentor program that assists budding and existing entrepreneurs, is offering free monthly classes for entrepreneurs starting Oct. 1 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

This is a partnerships with Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce,  Tahoe Mountain Lab and the college’s Future Business Leaders club. The ongoing program is 6-9pm on the first Thursday of the month in the Aspen Room at LTCC.

Entrepreneurs Assembly is a Nevada not-for-profit corporation dedicated to educating and facilitating entrepreneurs in creating and growing their businesses.

Paddleboarders will be raising money for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League on Sept. 12.

The $50 entry fee includes lunch. All proceeds benefit the nonprofit that provides rides to cancer patients for treatment and gives financial grant to cancer patients.

·      Richard Solbrig, general manager of the South Tahoe Public Utilities District, will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of South Lake on Sept. 9 at noon at Harveys. The public is invited.

Expect delays on Highway 50 through Cave Rock beginning Sept. 9.

Both directions of traffic will be alternated through the eastbound Cave Rock tunnel, with travel delays of up to 30 minutes each weekday between approximately 7am and 4:30pm. The closures are anticipated to last four or five weeks.

The closures are so NDOT officials can make preparations for work that will begin in the spring.

The project will extend the westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel entrance, providing an extended overhang for further driver safety and protection against potential rockfall.

·       The annual Rock & Gem Show is Oct. 17-18 from 10am-5pm at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville. There will be 50 dealers featuring minerals, gems, jewelry, beads, fossils, petrified wood, gold, meteorites, geodes, lapidary material and tools; displays and jewelry-making demonstrations; free activities and rocks for kids. El Dorado County Ag in the Classroom will embark on the third annual South Lake Tahoe Farm Day at Camp Richardson on Sept. 22.

Nearly 600 local third- and fourth-grade students, their teachers, and chaperones will get a hands-on experience where lessons of agriculture and its role in everyday lives, the county, and its economy are taught in the context of local farms, ranches, and timber industry.

Interactive exhibits and demonstrations presented by organizations, businesses, and persons who are experts in their field include: nutrition, food preservation, worm composting, soil, working animals, food animals, invasive and beneficial insects, resources from healthy forests, organic pest management, watersheds, irrigation, land stewardship and more.

The ninth annual poker run to benefit Austin’s House is Sept. 19.

All types of vehicles are welcome to join. Registration is from 9-10am in the parking lot at Century 21 Clark Properties located at 1674 Highway 395 in Minden. The entry fee is $30 plus $20 for a second rider.

The fee includes a prize for the best poker hand, barbecue lunch, limited edition ride pin, pink bandana and excellent live music by Trippin’ King Snakes.

The first stop will be Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor in Genoa. The next draw will take place at Jethro’s in the Gardnerville Ranchos. The caravan then heads south on Highway 88 to Markleeville and a stop at the Wolf Creek Restaurant & Bar. The run continues over Monitor Pass down to Topaz Lake for the fourth stop at Iggy & Squiggy’s Holbrook Junction Bar. The final stop is Heritage Park in Gardnerville where lunch will be served with live music. The run is approximately 81 miles and will last about two hours.

Austin’s House is the only emergency children’s shelter in rural Northern Nevada.
