In 1952, George’s Gateway Club stood on the corner of Stateline Avenue and Highway 50. In 1955, Bill Harrah purchased it and opened his first Tahoe casino, Harrah’s Club.

Across the street were Sahati’s Stateline Country Club and the Nevada Club. In 1958, Bill Harrah purchased both and opened Tahoe Harrah’s. Harrah’s historic triangular marquee and parking lot were built about where the pictured coffee shop stood on the California side.

The Barton Foundation $14,500 to give away for community projects focused on building capacity through training, informational products, or events that increase mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and connect patients and their families to programs and services.

Priority will be given to “one time” investments, such as special projects or events. Grants will not be awarded for overhead or on-going services.

Grant proposals will be accepted until Nov. 30, with recipients notified no later than Jan. 30.

·       Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Area will debut its new building, the Alder Creek Adventure Center, on Nov. 27 from 5-7pm. This free event includes live music, appetizers, family entertainment and activities, and a no-host bar.

·       Author Laura McBride will be speaking at the Douglas County Library in Minden at 10am Nov. 21. Copies of “We Are Called to Rise” are available for loan from the Minden and Zephyr Cove libraries. They will remain on the New Arrivals shelves through February.

·       Bill Landon, safety and training coordinator and flight paramedic with Care Flight, has been awarded the 2015 Air and Surface Transport Nurses Association Lynn Stevens Excellence in Safety award.

·       The Rev Tour and Hole Shot Tour will work together, giving snowboardcross and skicross athletes an opportunity to train and compete at Squaw Valley on March 18.

·      Mammoth Mountain, home of the award-winning Unbound terrain parks and pipes, is set to host a freestyle trifecta Jan. 26-31. Freeskiers and snowboarders will compete in Mammoth’s 22-foot halfpipe, award-winning slopestyle course and the only big air on the Rev Tour.

Sierra-at-Tahoe’s annual dodge ball tournament at Steamers Bar & Grill will be Nov. 12.

There will be live music, drink specials and giveaways.

Each team should consist of five to six participants. Signups are at 6pm, with the tournament starting at 7:30pm. Here is more info about the tournament.

Learn the history of hatcheries and sport fishing at Lake Tahoe at a talk on Nov. 10 at the Camp Richardson Lodge.

Hear David M. Long tell the tall tales, mysteries, fun facts, and stories about intriguing people.

The talk is free for Lake Tahoe Historical Society members, $3 for others.

The event starts at 7pm.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe are accepting applications for the Violet Richardson award.

Each year the two South Shore Soroptimist clubs honor young women in the community ages 14-17 who are engaged in volunteer deeds such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; or working to end discrimination or poverty.

Each recipient will receive $100.

·       Lake Tahoe Cruises is offering a free sightseeing cruise to Emerald Bay aboard the M.S. Dixie II for active or retired military at noon Veterans Day. For more info, go online.

·       Kirkwood expects to open Nov. 21, Squaw Valley on Nov. 25, and Alpine Meadows and Tahoe Donner Downhill on Dec. 21, assuming conditions are OK to do so.

·       North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District has lifted the seasonal fire restrictions on outdoor. Permits for open burning of pine needles, slash pile burning, construction warming fires, open wood-burning camp and cooking fires, are available for free at the district’s administration office, 866 Oriole Way, Incline Village.

·      Mountain Magic’s 17th annual dance convention is at MontBleu in Stateline Nov. 5-8. Go online for more information.

·       Tahoe Toastmasters is having an open house Nov. 23 at 6:30pm in South Tahoe Public Utility District’s board room, 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe. The club meets the second, fourth, and fifth Mondays of each month from 6:30-7:45 pm in the STPUD board room.

·       California State Parks will honor veterans, as well as active and reserve personnel, by offering free admission at 143 participating state parks on Veterans Day.

·       Alaska Airlines is adding nonstop service between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and Orange County’s John Wayne Airport.

·       Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for photos at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe on Dec. 19 from 5-7pm in the Living Room, followed by story time with Mrs. Claus from 7-8pm.

·       The fourth annual Light Up South Lake Tahoe is a Dec. 5 starting at 6pm. Decorated fire trucks and snowplows will lead the procession along Highway 50 beginning at Stateline and concluding with a Christmas tree lighting celebration at the Y. Santa will be part of the fun.

·      Tahoe South Restaurant Week is Jan. 8-15. Establishments will feature specially priced and prix fixe menus highlighting the theme Made with Altitude. Diners simply visit their favorite spots throughout the week to enjoy the special menus. Passes, tickets or coupons are not required. Go online for more info.

Plates for Powder offers individuals who purchase Lake Tahoe license plate in California or Nevada two free lift tickets to one of the Tahoe resorts participating in the program.

Plate sales and renewal fees generate proceeds that go directly to the California Tahoe Conservancy and Nevada Division of State Lands to fund hiking and biking trails and watershed restoration projects. The Tahoe Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money for environmental improvement projects that support lake clarity, recreation and stewardship in the Tahoe Basin, is organizing the program on behalf of the public agencies.

The resorts participating in the promotion include Diamond Peak, Heavenly Mountain Resort, Homewood Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, Northstar, Royal Gorge Cross Country, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Cross Country and Tahoe Donner.

The American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe will be honoring all veterans, active and retired on Veterans Day.

The ceremony will take place at 11am Nov. 11 at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Formerly Armistice Day, Nov. 11 commemorates the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War I in 1918.

Happy Homestead (1261 Johnson Blvd.) is the final resting place to more than 560 veterans. Volunteers are needed to help our local veteran’s group place American flags at their grave sites in the morning on Veterans Day.  Volunteers are asked to meet at the cemetery at 8 that morning.
