South Lake Tahoe will be celebrating Earth Day on April 28 at Bijou Community Park.

Earth Day recognizes, celebrates, and promotes the region’s beauty, while educating the public about local environmental issues.

This will be an opportunity to learn about ways to counteract global climate change through recycling and composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability, and reducing one’s ecological footprint.

There will be live music and dance, a kid zone, educational booths and local vendors. Food and local crafts will be available for purchase.

The free event is from 10am-3pm.

·      Purchase preferred seating tickets for the Kings Beach July 3 Fireworks & Beach Party before midnight May 27 to be entered into a random drawing for a chance to win a North Lake Tahoe vacation package. Ticket proceeds help to pay for the Kings Beach event.

·      Maryland-based DiamondRock Hospitality Co. bought The Landing Resort in South Lake Tahoe for $42 million. Two Roads Hospitality will operate it.

·      Douglas County Public Library in Minden will be providing free financial literacy programs. For children ages 8 to 12 it will be April 21 at 2pm and will include interactive activities. Teens (ages 13-18) will be taught how to be savvy with money through the Bite of Reality on April 24 at 3pm. Both programs will be presented by Greater Nevada Credit Union.

·      LuLu Hair Design is hosting a St. Baldrick’s event April 21 at Peak inside Harrah’s Lake Tahoe at 6pm. Hair collected helps cancer patients.

·      Scorpions will be at Harveys on Aug. 31 at 7:30pm. Opening will be Queensryche. Tickets range from $69.50 to $149.50.

South Lake Tahoe Library will be celebrating Star Wars Day on May 4.

The public can come meet “Star Wars” characters.

The 501st Legion’s Central California Garrison will be at the library to celebrate reading. Bring a camera to take photos, and check out your favorite “Star Wars” book or movie.

Costumes are encouraged, all ages welcome.

The event is from 3-4:30pm at the library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·      Tahoe Forest Health System will be providing affordable health screenings on April 13 from 7-9am at Tahoe Forest Center for Health in Truckee and Incline Village Community Hospital in Incline Village. No appointment is necessary.

·      Zephyr Cove Library on April 21 at 2pm is showing “Coco” (rated PG). The movie and popcorn are free. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library. 

·      Bona Fide Books’ second volume of “Permanent Vacation” will be out this summer. Free shipping on orders placed before June 8.

·      The second annual Lake Tahoe Brewfest will be June 2 at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge.

·      The 17th annual Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue event is Sept. 9. It starts and ends in Stateline.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s annual tourism forum will be May 10.

This year’s event will feature two keynote speakers, as well as breakout sessions focusing on the hospitality, retail, and culinary industries.

Early bird tickets are on sale now through May 1. They are $30 for chamber members, $50 non-members. Then they g up to $40 and $60, respectively.

The event will be from 8am-noon at the Hard Rock in Stateline.

·      Douglas County Senior Services will be hosting its 18th annual Big Mama’s Show & Shine Classic Car Show on May 12 from 10am-3pm at the Lampe Park Pavilion in Gardnerville. This event serves as a fundraiser for the Meals on Wheels program.

·      There will be a quarterly report on vacation home rentals at the April 17 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.

·      Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will display blue ribbons on patrol car antennas for the month of April to increase autism awareness in the community. 

·      Truckee planning commissioners have scheduled a special meeting for April 26 at 6pm at council chambers to review draft land use regulations for commercial cannabis delivery services.

·      Hyatt Regency in Incline Village is introducing Wind Down Wednesday, a free community yoga event hosted by the resort, on April 18 at 6:30pm. It includes a one-hour all levels Vinyasa class.

There will be an Earth Day community clean up event on April 18.

Meet in front of Basecamp Pizza in Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe at 9am.

During the snow melt, trash can become exposed. Cleanup materials will be supplied. Bring a reusable water bottle, gloves and friends.

Lunch, raffle and a prize will be provided to all volunteers starting at noon. Complimentary valet parking will be provided at the Marriott Grand Residence Club for volunteers during the event.

·      The Truckee Elementary School upgrade project groundbreaking ceremony will be May 2 at 4pm.

·      The Kings Beach Elementary School upgrade project groundbreaking will be June 5 at 4:30pm.

Placer County will host workshops this month to gather feedback on how to improve the permitting process for commercial and residential project developers.

The goals are to create a more user-friendly experience, and save project applicants time and money.

Engineers, design professionals, consultants, contractors, utility agencies, members of special districts and public agencies, and other interested parties are invited.

The workshops are:

• April 18, 1-5pm: Engineering: Improvement plans and final map process
• April 19, 8am-noon: Building: Building permit process
• April 19, 1-5pm: Planning: Entitlement process.
