The Warren Miller movie “Chasing Shadows” will be shown at the theater at South Tahoe High School on Jan. 29 at 7:30pm.

This is a fundraiser for high school ski team. Tickets are $15.

There will also be a silent auction and ski team sweat shirts for sale.

·       Huckleberry Canyon will be the venue for the Sierra-at-Tahoe Huck Cup. This two-star Freeride World Tour Qualifying event will take place on 320 acres featuring everything from mini-Alaskan style lines to triple drops to tight chutes. The event is Feb. 26-27.

·       The Douglas County Public Library in Minden will be closed Feb. 9 for staff training.

·       Truckee will host the second in a series of public meetings on the proposed Donner Pass Road streetscape improvement project known as Envision DPR on March 3 from 5-7pm at Truckee Town Hall. This meeting has been moved from Feb. 3.

·       Zipcar is now available in Reno.

·       Shawne Corley becomes El Dorado County’s assistant chief administrative officer starting Feb. 2. She is from Sutter County where she worked with CAO Larry Combs.

South Lake Tahoe has sand bags available at no cost year-round.

The sand lot is located at the city’s public works yard at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd., which is next to Campground by the Lake.

To pick up sand bags, proceed through the gate at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd. and drive to the back of the lot. At the back of the lot is a large sand mound, shovels and bags. Residents fill their own bags and transport back to their own residence. Limit the number of bags to 10 per visit.

Access to sand bags is available during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4pm.

The eighth annual Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraiser to benefit Austin’s House is Feb. 26 at the Carson Valley Inn from 6-10pm.

Put on your jeans and cowboy hat to celebrate the party atmosphere of Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday. This casual fundraiser features food, music, dancing, games, raffle prizes, and a silent auction.

The party starts at 6pm with a cocktail hour. Then there will be a barbecue buffet dinner. After dinner, the Cowboy Mardi Gras party hits full stride with music, dancing and fun games.

·      The Restoration of Fire Adapted Ecosystems project is a proposal to restore six impaired meadows in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The draft decision has been issued, which triggers a 45-day comment period. Those who submitted comments during the comment period last year, have standing to object during the objection period. The draft decision and environmental assessment are available online.

·       Fit Pup Fridays is an event on the last Friday of the month at Elevated Fitness in South Lake Tahoe that benefits the Lake Tahoe Humane Society. Classes are free that day for people who bring a pet food donation. Dogs are welcome at the classes. For more info, call 530.318.8666.

·      University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering an educational presentation Jan. 28 at 6pm, Incline Village GID Public Works, 1220 Sweetwater Road, Incline Village.

·       Students in Incline Village schools, including Lake Tahoe School, may receive a free 2015-16 Diamond Peak season pass in exchange for their January 2016 report card with straight A’s.

·      The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District responded to a backcountry rescue incident near Monkey Rock Road off Tunnel Creek Road in Incline Village on Jan. 26 at 3pm. The man was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno with unknown injuries. An agency rep didn’t know what type of rescue it was.

·      The U.S. Forest Service is auctioning vehicles for a variety of national forests from Feb. 1-8. For more info, go online.

·       Truckee’s Community Development Department now offers over-the-counter plan review every Thursday from 7:30am-1pm, with specific time slots from 11am-1pm by appointment.

·       Nevada Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison is in India to open an office promoting Nevada tourism.

Several representatives from Truckee will in be South Lake Tahoe on Feb. 17 talking about how the town has successfully funded recreation.

In 2014, with a 75 percent approval, residents passed the Truckee Trails Measure R, a one-quarter cent sales tax to raise more than $10 million in 10 years for trails in Truckee.

The free 90-minute talk starting at noon is designed to show people how partners in the Truckee area worked together to create the measure and generate community support. Speakers will be Allison Pedley, executive director of Truckee Trails Foundation; Tony Lashbrook, town manager; and Paco Lindsay, Truckee business owner.

The talk will be in the Aspen room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

This summer marks the 10th annual Music on the Beach free concert series at Kings Beach State Recreation Area in Kings Beach.

To commemorate the event, North Tahoe Business Association is looking for a professional and student graphic designer to overhaul the marketing materials. The deadline to submit ideas is Feb. 5.

This summer, the Music on the Beach concert series will have 10 Friday concerts in a 12-week period, starting June 17 and ending Sept. 2.

South Lake Tahoe is looking for input as it prepares design guidelines to complement the adopted design standards.

An online survey is available now through Jan. 29. The survey includes character images that will be used to help understand the community’s vision for South Lake Tahoe’s aesthetic quality.

The next public meeting will be Feb. 17th from 5-7pm at Lake Tahoe Airport to review the draft design guidelines.

·       North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection has rescheduled the Jan. 13 and Jan. 15 avalanche training to Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. There will be four 30-minute stations, beginning at 10am and 1pm. The stations will consist of transceiver and RECCO search, probe line organization, snow pit-snow sack information, and depending on availability, a search dog demonstration. The trainings will be on the back road into Mt. Rose Ski Area across from the summit restroom parking lot. The drill area is within a few minutes’ walk.

·       The current Leadership Lake Tahoe class is hosting a bowling tournament Feb. 5 from 6-8pm at Tahoe Bowl in South Lake Tahoe to support the group’s May summit called Make Tahoe Work by Working in Tahoe. For more info, email maketahoework@gmail.com.
