South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library has two history events planned for early April.

On April 2 at 11am, curator Mark Jensen returns to share more stories from Carson Valley’s historic Dangberg Home Ranch. Jensen will tell tales using the park’s historic artifacts, photographs and documents.

On April 5 at 6pm, Lake Tahoe’s Railroad History will come to life with a presentation by Jerry Blackwill, vice president of strategic planning for the Truckee Donner Railroad Society. Blackwill will tell the story of the Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company, and how Duane L. Bliss, William Seth Bliss, Walter D. Bliss, Duane L. Bliss Jr. and Frank Titus built and ran this tourist system, laying the foundation for Lake Tahoe’s present day tourist industry.

Both event are free. The library is at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County Public Library is lending iPad Air 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, and Nintendo 3DS devices.  A selection of games are available for checkout with the Nintendo 3DS.

People must be at least 18 years old to rent a device, have a Douglas County library card in good standing, and present a valid government issued identification. A mobile device use agreement must also be signed.

One-hour reserve-a-tech sessions are available to those unfamiliar with the devices.

Truckee Chapter 1073 of the Experimental Aircraft Association is awarding three scholarships to local Young Eagles to attend EAA’s Air Academy this summer at Oshkosh, Wis.

Keely Hoyt of Truckee will attend the Advanced Air Academy for 16- to 18-year-olds; Kestrel Sura of Kings Beach and Hayden Ruttenberg of Truckee will attend the Basic Air Academy for 14- and15-year-olds.

Air Academy camps designed to introduce young people to the aviation world. Participants explore aviation through technical and learning classrooms as well as hands-on experiences from knowledgeable instructors.

The next Young Eagles rally will occur the day after the July 9 Truckee Tahoe Air Show & Family Festival. Registration occurs at the air show, at the EAA chapter hangar on the airport, and flights will start at 8am on July 10.

In May of 1969, the city of South Lake Tahoe issued a building permit for a new office building at 1052 Tata Lane. The final inspection was February 1970, with the U.S. Forest Service as the owner and occupant.

Next door to the right was Don Weir’s Dodge dealership which later became Bernie Kass’ Tahoe Dodge and Datsun. It is now the Kmart Garden, Appliance & Furniture store.

In December 1982, the city pulled a permit for interior remodel and the 1052 Tata Lane building became the city administrative center.

In 1984, the City Services Center and the City Council chambers were at the corner of Tata Lane and Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Previously, this building housed the Pacific Telephone Business and Retail Offices when it was built by Pacific Telephone in the 1960s. The large display room, where one could select which Princess or wall or desk phone you wanted installed by PacTel, eventually became the City Council chambers.

The city administrative offices and council chambers moved to the airport and now this building houses El Dorado County Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs.

So impressive in these photos is the trees growth.

El Dorado County’s Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees is looking for members.

It is comprised of senior citizens who enhance crime prevention services in the community. The STARs conduct patrols in specially marked vehicles, functioning as the eyes and ears of the sheriff’s department, reporting any suspicious activity observed.

STARs help with:

• Conducting business/home security checks
• Patrol trailheads, beaches, and campgrounds
• Provide traffic control at accident scenes, forest fires, and other emergency events
• Assist at the Drug Store Project, Day of the Young Child, Sober Grad Night, and other community events
• Patrol school parking lots, school bus stops, and neighborhoods.

Applicants must attend a two-week training where volunteers gain knowledge of patrol procedures, radio communications, traffic control, vacation home checks, and department policies and procedures.

The inaugural Cotton Tails Easter celebration at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa will include a pancake brunch served picnic style, followed by an Easter egg hunt for children of all ages, with baskets being awarded to raffle winners in each age group.

There will be a photo booth and face-painting artist. The Easter Bunny is scheduled to make an appearance. There will also be farm fresh eggs for sale.

The event is March 26 from 10am-2pm. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children for the pancake brunch. The Easter egg hunt is $6 per participant.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be in South Lake Tahoe distributing food on March 23 from 10-11am at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

One allocation per household will be provided to people struggling to make ends meet, who live in El Dorado County and meet the state income guidelines. Income guidelines are online.

·      Lake Tahoe Bike Coalition was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s On Our Way Small Grants Program. The grant will fund the development of an interactive, online bike map for the Tahoe region.

·      Bona Fide Print Club meets from 6-9pm on the third Monday of the month. Carve linoleum and wood blocks, and print cards, fine art for fun. Bring supplies, some are also available. Cost is $10. Bona Fide HQ is at 1069 Magua St., No. 4, Meyers.

·      Lake Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club is having a spring social March 26 at 6pm at the clubhouse, 2435 Venice Drive East in the Tahoe Keys Marina. Physical therapist Christina Frolich will talk about preparing one’s body for the upcoming sailing season. The cost is $5 and covers a full salad bar, bread and dessert. ·      Literary Arts & Wine is a monthly reading series on the third Sunday of every month at 6pm at Coffeebar in Truckee. March 20 features Philip Barron and “Tahoe Blues” contributor Liz Tucker.

·       The Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe’s eighth annual Black Tie & Tails event in February included nearly 330 guests and 100 dogs, with $105,000 raised for the organization.
