Known as the Tahoe Marina Inn in the 1960s, albeit no marina, this fashionable multi-story motel with a pool was built on the Bijou beachfront about a block east of the Timber Cove pier.

Local radio station KTHO had its offices and studio in the TMI lobby in 1966.

Later owners changed the name to Lakeshore Lodge and Spa. It stands adjacent to today’s Lakeland Village and behind Heidi’s Pancake House.

A one-day summit aims to provide Lake Tahoe residents with the necessary tools to make Tahoe a viable place to succeed personally and professionally.

The Make Tahoe Work for You Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit was created with the goal to help locals successfully navigate roadblocks and create a fulfilling life in the home they love.

The May 6 event features keynote speaker Donna Hartley, author of “Fire Up Your Life,” as well as speakers Tracy DeLuca and Matt Westfield . The day will also include interactive workshops and panel discussions focused on personal growth and business development. Sessions include financial and accounting strategies, resume and interview skills, lessons learned from starting a business, building community momentum, and professional opportunities, among other topics. Attendees are encouraged to create connections during the summit lunch and networking hour.

·       The International Association of Firefighters Association Local No. 2139, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, along with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District’s Local No. 3895 donated $5,000 to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation to be distributed among five families with children affected by cancer to help pay for medical expenses, travel expenses related to treatment and household living expenses.

·       North Tahoe Public Utility District has hired Lake Tahoe resident and civil engineer Stephen Twomey as project engineer and construction manager.

Kindergarten registration for next school year begins in May for Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

For kindergarten, kids must be 5 by Sept. 1, 2016. For transitional K the child must turn 5 between Sept. 2-Dec. 2, 2016. This is a two-year program at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

Registration is May 2-6.

California Law require:
1. The child’s birth certificate.
2. Proof of immunizations, which includes the Varicella (Chicken Pox), Hepatitis B and for
most children – the last booster shot. Children will not be enrolled in school without presenting an
up-to-date immunization record.
3. A health examination upon entry to school.
4. An oral health examination upon entry to school.
5. Proof of California residency.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is seeking comments on a draft environmental assessment for the management and use of existing roads, trails and facilities in the basin.

The environmental document analyzes: maintenance and management of roads, trails and facilities; authorization of outfitter guide activities; authorization of events; and authorization of special use permits for recreational uses in the forest.

Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church is hosting an end of life matters seminar.

It will be April 30 from 9am-1:30pm in the family room of the South Lake Tahoe church.

This seminar focuses on the preparation and resources available to create a satisfying final chapter in one’s life. Topics will include:

• Facing mortality with courage and hope. Distinguishing the possible line between an abundant life and prolonging life.
• Understanding wills, trusts, health care directives, power of attorney and other crucial documents.
• Examining healthcare realities that impact end of life, including medical provisions and the new death with dignity legislation.
• Considering loved ones, and the possible burden of care giving and decision-making.
• Leaving behind a legacy through example, wisdom and opportunity.

Through a series of talks the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe aims to give the community information on animal welfare topics, from learning red alert animal behaviors to look for at the park to the latest in animal welfare policy.

The series will be at the animal shelter, 10961 Stevens Lane in Truckee.

Next up is Sue Sternberg on April 29 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Sternberg has more than 35 years of dog behavior experience, and will provide a presentation on dog play and aggressive behaviors so pet owners can keep an eye on a group of dogs playing in the park or in the woods to prevent fun from turning into a fight. Cost is $25.

On May 20 from 5:30-6:30pm, Kevin O’Neill, vice president of state affairs for the ASPCA, will speak about the legislative process, current animal welfare issues pending in Sacramento, and themes in animal welfare policy. There is no cost to attend.
