·       The 33rd annual Snow Golf Tournament at Alpine Meadows is April 16. Tee off at 9am. The nine-hole course starts at the top of Summit Express Chair, with the last hole leaving golfers at the base of Alpine Bowl Chair.

The Amgen Tour of California needs volunteers for the women’s and men’s stages in Lake Tahoe on May 19.

Locally, 300 volunteers are being sought. Most of the positions consist of a course marshal – a critical role where the individual assists race staff and local law enforcement authorities along the route monitoring pedestrian traffic, road closures, and keeping spectators informed as the race progresses. There are also base area positions available like security and check-in.

The Future-Ready South Shore Luncheon & Forum is designed to engage business owners and community members on how to prepare for new and younger customers.

The event will feature keynote speaker Lynn Carpenter, the vice president of marketing for Visit California. She will discuss Visit California’s international and domestic marketing initiatives and share with attendees how local businesses can and should leverage the state’s efforts. She’ll also give insight into tomorrow’s visitor and discuss opportunities to attract the changing demographic.

Carl Ribaudo, president of SMG Consulting, will speak to cultural shifts in the regional market place and what can be learned from the competitive set.

Jason Broadwater, a creative entrepreneur and president of RevenFlo, will strive to dispel myths about millennials by presenting research on millennial life choices and how that impacts their disposable income available for travel.

The April 26 noon-3pm event is put on by Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce and Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. Cost is $25 for chamber members and $40 for non-members. The South Lake Tahoe Senior Center is hosting two one-day classes for drivers of all ages.

The instructor is R.S. Lynn.

Auto insurance companies give a premium discount valid for three years to those over 55 who complete the class. There are no tests to pass.

AARP members pay discounted fee of $15; for others the cost is $20. Payment by check is preferred.

·       Authors Brian Turner and Paul Lisicky have been named 2016 Guggenheim Fellows by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Turner directs the low-residency MFA program for creative writing at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village. Lisicky is also a faculty member in the SNC Tahoe MFA program, as well as the MFA program at Rutgers University-Camden and the Juniper Summer Writing Institute.

Local birders Bob and Jenny Sweatt spent the entire year of 2015 searching the basin for as many species of birds as they could find through Tahoe Institute for Natural Science’s Tahoe Big Year.

The Big Year celebrates the hundreds of bird species that make the Tahoe region their home all year, during summer or winter, or while passing through to other destinations. The Sweatts documented their hundreds of discoveries with photographs.

Join the Friends of the Library for a free a slideshow presentation April 13 at 6pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library to see the unique species that were in Tahoe. This is an opportunity to learn about the Tahoe region’s diverse bird community.

The last two days of free tax return preparation will be April 14-15 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Taxpayers should bring last year’s tax return, all 2015 tax documents, a photo ID, and Social Security card.

Hours on Thursday are 1-6pm and Friday from 9am-2pm. The last client is taken a half-hour before closing.

The El Dorado County Mineral and Gem Society provides scholarships to qualified El Dorado County high school graduates who are pursuing a degree in earth sciences or the lapidary arts fields at an accredited college or university.

Scholarships up to $2,000 are available. Deadline for application is May 1.

Interested students must write an essay about what has motivated them to pursue this career goal, what they hope to achieve, and who their role models are.

El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency is looking for individuals in the South Lake Tahoe area to serve as resource families, providing shelter care (up to 30 days) or full term homes (up to and more than 18 months) for foster children.

Resource family is the new California term for foster parents, relative caregivers, non-related extended family members, and adoptive families who care for children and youth in out-of-home placement. Reimbursement is provided.

A foster child is a child who has been removed from their current home because of abuse, neglect, exploitation or other problems. While the child is in foster care, efforts are made to assist the child and their parents to address the problems and, whenever possible, ultimately reunite them.

Individuals interested in learning more about becoming a foster parent resource family are invited to attend an information session on April 20 at 6:30pm at Lake Tahoe Community College, Room 106, South Lake Tahoe.
