South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Live Violence Free are partnering for a community presentation on human trafficking on May 18 at 6pm at Sierra Community Church.

Author John Vanek will be the featured speaker. Vanek is a leadership, collaboration, and anti-human trafficking consultant and speaker working with law enforcement agencies, non-governmental and community-based organizations, academic institutions and private sector companies.

Vanek is a nationally recognized authority on human trafficking and the response to modern-day slavery. He managed the San Jose Police Department Human Trafficking Task Force from 2006-11.

Expect delays on Interstate 80 east of Colfax as work on the Truck Climbing Lane project resumes.

Lane closures will be required to construct a freeway lane cross-over in order to complete the replacement of the Cape Horn Bridge.

Caltrans will utilize both lane closures and “rolling block” escorts of traffic by the California Highway Patrol through closure zones to construct a “cross-over” that will shift westbound freeway lanes to the east in order to allow the structure replacement work to continue on the west side of the Cape Horn Bridge. The cross-over work is anticipated to take place in the project’s construction zone, weather permitting, from 6pm April 30 to 6pm May 2.

Motorists are encouraged to plan for delays and adjust their travel time accordingly.

On May 3, the non-partisan Good Governance Group of Douglas County will have its 2018 candidates’ forum featuring individuals running for Douglas County offices.

This free event will be at the Carson Valley Inn, in Minden. Doors will open at 5:30pm to give candidates and voters a half hour to mingle before the program begins. Libations will be available from the in-room no-host bar during this time.

Voters of all ages and political affiliations are invited to attend and participate. The program will feature formal Q&A sessions for sheriff and county commissioner candidates, as well as an opportunity for other candidates to introduce themselves and state the reasons they are seeking election or re-election.

There will be a free medication take-back day in Truckee and on April 28 at the Gateway Shopping Center from 9am-1pm.

This is an opportunity to drop off unneeded or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications safely, effectively, and anonymously. Put pills into a zip-lock bag.

There are also permanent drug bins at the Truckee Police Department and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office-Tahoe station.

·      Placer County planning commissioners on April 26 are scheduled to consider a conditional use permit for Verizon to install 75-tower disguised as a tree near Brockway Golf Course in Tahoe Vista.

·      South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Festival is April 28 from 10am to 3pm at Bijou Community Park.

·      The California Natural Resources Agency released a final report that recommends adding 37 miles of the upper Mokelumne River to the California Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The study report is available for review online.

Work on Highway 28’s share-used path, highway safety, accessibility, and water quality is expected to resume April 30 and continue through the fall.

Daytime and nighttime single lane closures will take place on Highway 28 from the southern end of Incline Village to three miles south of Sand Harbor State Park throughout the summer.

Motorists should anticipate delays of up to 20-30 minutes with one-lane flagger controlled closures. A majority of the work will occur Sunday night through Friday afternoon.
