Choices for Children is hosting the 2nd annual Mother’s Day Diaper Drive from April 29-May 16.

Diaper donation boxes will be distributed throughout the community, including at the South Lake Tahoe Library, Boys and Girls Club, First Baptist Church, and South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center.

Diapers of any size and baby wipes are being collected to give to families in the community that are struggling to provide these basics for their children.

According to the agency, one in three 1 in 3 U.S. families has difficulty affording the cost of diapers.

After collecting and destroying 5.5 million pounds — 2,762 tons — of unused prescription drugs in the past five years, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is continuing its efforts to take back unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications.

The DEA on April 30 in partnership with local law enforcement is having a collection day. This service is free of charge, with no questions asked.

The public may find a nearby collection site by going online, clicking on the “Got Drugs?” icon, and entering their ZIP code into the search window. Only pills and other solids, like patches, will be accepted. Liquids, needles or other sharps will not be accepted.

According to the DEA, in the previous 10 take-back events, approximately 302,427 pounds or 151 tons of unused medication were collected from Northern California and Central Valley residents.

·       Caltrans on April 21 had a statewide litter pick up day. Caltrans District 10 employees picked up 1,552 bags of litter, trash and debris in its eight counties, including Alpine and Amador.

·       Tioga Pass is expected to open this week.

·       El Dorado County’s mobile food pantry will not be in South Lake Tahoe this week. It will be here May 4 at the American Legion parking lot.

·       Former Douglas County Manager Jim Nichols is a finalist for a similar job in Glenwood Springs, Colo. Tony O’Rourke, ex-South Lake Tahoe city manager, is a contender for the administrator job of Cañon City, Colo.

·      El Dorado County’s IT Department will be performing extensive data center maintenance and equipment moves April 30 from 5pm-midnight. During this period IT services may be interrupted for several hours, including our public website.

·      Tahoe Women’s Community Fund’s first grants gala is June 3 from 6-8pm at Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe. The $35 tickets are available online. The deadline to buy a ticket is May 27.

·     On April 27  drivers should expect heavier than usual traffic near the Truckee High School in the morning because first responders and the school will be conducting a presentation near Northwoods and Donner Pass Road intersection.

South Tahoe Public Utility District board on May 12 will be discussing raising water and sewer rates.

The 6pm pubic hearing is to discuss the 2016-17 budget and capital improvement plan.

In 2014, the district sent a five-year Proposition 218 notice to all customers that calls for water rates to go up no more than 6.5 percent each year and sewer rates to spike by 6 percent annually. Staff is recommending the full increase for this next fiscal year that begins July 1.

The meeting is at the district offices, 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

·       Opening day for High Sierra ASA Softball League in South Lake Tahoe is April 30. The ceremonies begin at 10:30am at South Tahoe High School. High Sierra ASA uses STHS and Tahoe Valley Elementary fields for games.

·       South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center’s Cinco de Mayo celebration-fundraiser is May 6, 5-10pm at the Heavenly California Lodge.

·       Lake Tahoe Golf Course has opened for the season, while Tahoe Paradise will open April 29, and Edgewood Tahoe on May 9.

·       Mount Rose Ski Area is closing May 8, Mammoth on Memorial Day weekend, and Squaw and Alpine  in May, with no exact date.

·       Lake Tahoe Airport received 0.96 inches of precipitation on April 22. This breaks the record of 0.30 inches set in 2010, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

·      The annual Great Bike Ride is May 10 from 11am-1pm. Meet in Placerville at the El Dorado County Government Center, Building A breezeway. It will be a casual ride on the El Dorado Trail from Forni Road to Missouri Flat Road and back. Food Bank of El Dorado County will be distributing food in South Lake Tahoe on April 27 from 10-11am.

The give-away will be at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd. These are emergency supplemental groceries to those who need it most. One allocation per household is allowed.
