South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue along with multiple local agencies are coming together to host the third annual Wildfire Safety Expo on June 11 from noon to 3pm at the TJ Maxx parking lot at the Y.

The event will include information on creating a home evacuation plan, preparing for fire, creating defensible space and more.

The Wildfire Safety Expo is designed to be fun for the entire family, with a special appearance by Smokey Bear.

Participating agencies include: South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, Tahoe Douglas Fire, CalFire, U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, California Highway Patrol, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department, Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, South Tahoe Action Teams, California Tahoe Conservancy, Master Gardeners, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, American Red Cross, California Conservation Corps, South Tahoe Public Utility District, California Conservation Corps, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Liberty Utilities, South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling Services, and TJ Maxx.

·       The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board will have a public hearing June 22 at 9:30am in Stateline about a proposed hockey academy in Meyers.

·       Music on the Beach, the free concert series at Kings Beach State Recreation Area, kicks off June 17 from 6-8pm. It will continue every Friday evening until Sept. 2.

·       The Douglas County Public Library is offering a Summer Saturday Family Movie series. “Brave” (rated PG) will be shown June 11 at 2pm in the library meeting room in Minden. The movie and popcorn are free.

·     Truckee is having a free paper shredding event June 4 from 10am-noon at the airport.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce will host a training with Alex Smith on what is required for Nevada commerce tax for businesses that gross less than $4 million.

The training will be on June 7 from 9-10am at the chamber conference room in Stateline.

Nevada implemented a $1.5 billion tax plan to fund its education system. As part of the plan, the state created a business entity tax called the “commerce tax.” The commerce tax law became effective July 1, 2015.

Each business registered to do business with Nevada is required to file, although those whose gross is less than $4 million will not be paying the commerce tax.

This training is for all Nevada registered businesses that gross less than $4 million.

·       Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows celebrated Memorial Day with a $150,000 donation to High Fives Foundation for the 2016-17 Military to the Mountains program.

·       Tahoe Adventure Company is reviving the mountain bike rental program at Tahoe Cross Country in Tahoe City. It will include mountain bike rentals and accessories, basic tuning services, and guided tours.

·       South Tahoe Association of Realtors has begun a weekly program to volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.

·       The League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Restoration Day is June 4 from 9:15am-noon. Volunteers will survey the plants that were planted last September, water any plants that need a little care, stabilize stream banks and survey for aquatic invasive plants. For more info and to RSVP, go online.

Dump Day is the one day of the year South Shore residents can bring unwanted items to South Tahoe Refuse at huge discounts.

Clean Tahoe’s annual Community Cleanup Day on June 4 allows locals to dispose of an entire vehicle-load of unwanted household and bulk items for $5, or $10 for a truck and trailer. Residents can also take advantage of free document shredding, free disposal of e-waste such as TVs and computer monitors, and disposal of refrigerators for $15.

The prices are for California residential loads only. Commercial loads will pay regular prices, and Nevada residents will be charged $10 per vehicle load.

The Douglas County Public Library will be hosting a Lego building challenge every Tuesday from June 7 through July 26.

Youngsters can listen to a story and build part of that story from 3-4pm. The free build hour is from 4-5pm.

Lego bricks and building materials will be provided by the library. Lego Tuesdays are for children ages 6 and up.

·       Paradise Park in Meyers is looking for volunteers to help clean up the area on June 11 from 9am-1pm. Bring gloves, rakes and shovels.

·       University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Living with Fire Program team received the Great Basin Fire Mitigation, Education and Prevention Award at the Great Basin Fire Mitigation, Education and Prevention Conference in Boise, Idaho.

·       Drop off 1-gallon and 4-inch plastic plant containers that are in good condition in the bin provided at the South Tahoe Refuse transfer station located at 2140 Ruth Ave. in South Lake Tahoe, Monday-Friday during business hours through the month of June so they may be reused by the local master gardeners group.

·      The old Aviva Inn in Tahoe City is now a Basecamp Hotel similar to the one in South Lake Tahoe.

·       Incline Village Championship Golf Course will host glow-in-the-dark golf events on June 17 and Aug. 26.
