Now through June 13 the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and other state agencies are beefing up patrols and issuing citations to pedestrians and motorists who are breaking traffic safety laws.

Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey all traffic control signs and signals.  If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic. For motorists, they must yield to pedestrians and avoid passing vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.

Nearly 90 percent of the pedestrian and driver’s involved in fatal crashes are local residents, and not tourists, according to Douglas County officials.

Don’t worry when an army of fire vehicles descends upon Truckee on Tuesday.

Truckee Fire, U.S. Forest Service, Calfire and the town of Truckee are hosting a multi agency wildland drill June 7 from 8am-3pm.

Fire agencies will be training on a multi-faceted scenario that includes wildland fires, wildland urban interface areas, police tactics on road closures, along with community officials helping to manage a theoretical wildland incident in the area.

Expect to see fire agencies from all around the greater Lake Tahoe area, Reno and Sacramento. Expect delays in the areas of Tahoe Donner that exit on to Alder Creek Road near the lower Wolfgang area along with areas by the ski hill Slalom-Snowpeak Road, which will be used as a staging spot.

TEDxUniversityofNevada is looking for speakers for the fifth annual event on Jan. 21, 2017.

Local speakers interested in participating in the event have until June 24 to submit proposals to share their “big idea worth spreading.”

TEDxUniversityofNevada is moving the event to the Grand Theater at the Grand Sierra Resort because it seats 2,700 people. The 1,200-seat Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts sold out this year.

Now its 67th year, the re-creation of the wagons what went west to Placerville during the Gold Rush will stop at MontBleu in Stateline on Saturday.

On Sunday the procession will continue to Placerville, leaving the South Shore in the late morning.
