El Dorado County’s free weatherization services could save the average household $400 or more each year.

Qualified low-income property owners and renters have an opportunity to receive energy improvement services through the program.

Weatherization auditors check the home to see where improvements can be made. Services are customized for each home and designed for maximum cost savings. Shade screens, fixing broken glass, installing ceiling fans and insulation in attics, repair or replace water heaters, and repair or replace heating units and air conditioners are some of the possibilities.

Tahoe Women Fighting Breast Cancer is a fundraiser for METAvivor Research and Support.

This nonprofit provides support for women and men with metastatic breast cancer, and funding research to transition from a terminal illness to a controlled, chronic condition.

The event is June 27 from 5:30-9pm at 121 Holly Lane, Stateline. This is in Lake Village. Music will be provided by Ike & Martin. Bring a beverage, lawn or beach chair. Finger foods and dessert will be provided.

Douglas County is preparing the five-year update to the county’s master plan.

The master plan provides guidance on the location of different types of development in order to protect public health, safety, and welfare. There are 11 elements such as land use, housing, and transportation, as well as a five-year action plan to address specific development and quality of life issues within the County.

The current Douglas County Master Plan was first adopted in April 1996 and was last updated in 2011.

Comments and suggestions on the plan may be submitted at any time. Draft chapters will be posted for review and feedback during the summer and fall. The county has a survey to gather input from residents.

The Douglas County Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners will have public hearings about it in early 2017.

Healthcare professionals, wilderness enthusiasts, first responders, outdoor educators, and medical students will be putting their emergency medical knowledge to the test at Tahoe’s MedWAR Challenge on Sept. 17. 

MedWAR, which stands for Medical Wilderness Adventure Race, combines physical challenges and wilderness medicine in a daylong race.  The adventure takes place in Eldorado National Forest and includes mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, and orienteering. Along the adventure, teams are expected to work together to address and treat patients in mock wilderness medicine scenarios.

Registration is now open. Teams and volunteers may register online. The challenge costs $350 for a team of four people and includes a pre-event lecture, kayak rental, gift bag, team shirt, and a post-race dinner. Space is limited to 20 teams.

·       Because of construction at Lake Tahoe Community College this year’s commencement ceremony will take place June 24 at 6pm in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

·       Sweet Tahoe Time, located at 8636 N. Lake Blvd. in Kings Beach, will be opening 4th of July weekend.

·      Craig Hellberg, El Dorado County investigative assistant, was awarded the El Dorado Hills Rotary Club 2016 officer of the year award.

·       California Department of Fish and Wildlife recently certified five K-9s and their handlers.

·       Truckee is looking to improve trash and recycling services over the next year. This survey will help direct the changes.

South Lake Tahoe is hosting a 4th of July parade in honor of American Legion Post 795. Legion members will also serve as the parade marshals.

There will be about 50 entries and 150 walkers in the parade.

The parade will begin at 10am at the Y, go down Highway 50 and finish at Rite-Aid on Al Tahoe Boulevard.

There will be a party at the American Legion at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The two eastbound lanes of Highway 50 will be closed from 9:30am to 10:20am with a rolling lane opening beginning at approximately 10:20am.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe’s 4th annual Summer Kickoff – Native Garden Celebration is June 24 from 5-8pm.

It’s an opportunity to learn about native landscapes, tour the Leagues’ native garden and learn more about the League.

Bring your friends and family while we get together to recognize our dedicated volunteers and enjoy

There will be live music, food and beverages. Those who ride a bike will get a prize. The League is at 2608 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

·       Geoff Schladow with the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village will be giving a presentation July 28 about the most important factors that affected the health of Lake Tahoe last year. Cost is $5. The talk is from 5:30-7pm on the campus of Sierra Nevada College.

·       The California Tahoe Conservancy board on June 16 agreed to spend $116,000 to buy two parcels that are in stream environmental zones. One is on the banks of the Upper Truckee River in El Dorado County and the other along Snow Creek in Placer County.

·       Sherry Miller is leaving South Lake Tahoe to become the airport manager for Chico.

·       The Douglas County Public Library in Zephyr Cove will be closed June 25. It will resume its regular schedule June 29 at 11am.
