Ten people will vie for two seats on the South Lake Tahoe City Council.

On the Nov. 8 ballot will be Jason Collin, JoAnn Conner, Patrick Jarrett, Brooke Laine, Ted Long, Danny McLaughlin, Trey Riddle, John Shearer, Robert Topel and Tami Wallace.

Other South Shore races have not changed since last week.

·       Lake Tahoe Community College has been rated one of the top two-year schools in California.

·       National Championship Air Races has partnered with select Costco stores in Northern Nevada and Northern California to offer discounted tickets to the Sept. 14-18 event in Reno.

·       United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra has raised $100 million since its inception in 1942.

·       The East and West Carson River has been stocked with 1,800 pounds of rainbow trout, while West Carson also got cutthroat trout.

·       Tahoe Arts Project is having a fundraiser Aug. 25 from 7-9pm at Lakeshore Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. Music on the Beach will feature Trey Stone, Niall McGuinness and John Shipley. Bring food, beverages, blankets and low back chairs. Cost is $10.

·       Tahoe City Fine Arts and Crafts Festival is the last two weekends of August at the Boatworks Marina Green from 10am-5pm each day. It is free.

·       The Bicycle Advisory Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority meets Sept. 7 from 9-11am in the downstairs conference room at Lake Tahoe Airport.

·       Lake Tahoe Humane Society is putting on a poker run on Aug. 20. Registration starts at 10am and the event starts at noon at California Burger at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe. Poker hands will be collected at five stops, which include beaches and bars. The hands will be entered into the contest, with the worst and best winning bicycles.

Expect traffic controls on Black Bart, Martin, and Barbara avenues while El Dorado County puts slurry seal on the roads.

The reverse traffic controls are scheduled for Aug. 23-24. Drivers should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

The dates could change due to weather or other reasons.

The FBI’s Sacramento field office is accepting applications for the fall FBI Teen Academy.

This is open to high school juniors in the jurisdiction of the office, which include El Dorado, Placer and Alpine counties. Applicants don’t need to be interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or law.

If selected for the one-day class, students will spend the day with FBI personnel engaging in activities and discussions about what the FBI investigates. Classes may include discussions about terrorism, active shooter situations, and color of law and civil rights investigations; participation in controlled evidence response team and bomb techs scenarios; and conversations about online communication and making wise choices in an online world.

The FBI Teen Academy is free. The application is online.

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump is going to be in Lake Tahoe this month for a fund-raising dinner.

The Nevada Republican Party is hosting the dinner at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe on Aug. 26 at 6pm.

General admission is $200, with VIP tables running $5,000.

·       Phyllis Shafer, chair of the art department at Lake Tahoe Community College, is having a solo exhibition at Stremmel Gallery in Reno from Nov. 3-Dec. 3. There will be an opening reception on Nov. 3, 5:30-7:30pm.

·       The Carson Valley Inn is celebrating its 32nd birthday on Aug. 27 with a free performance by the Davisson Brothers Band at 7pm.

·       On Oct. 1 at 11am, South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library welcome Tahoe historian Mark McLaughlin as he talks about his latest book, “Snowbound! Legendary Winters of the Tahoe Sierra”. It profiles the Top 10 snowiest winters since 1879, based on snowfall measured at Donner Pass. The talk is free at the library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·       On Oct. 15 at 10am, Peter Mires, historical geographer and Carson City resident, will present an illustrated lecture on the rustic architecture of the Lake Tahoe region. Material for the talk comes from his recently published book “Lake Tahoe’s Rustic Architecture” (Arcadia Publishing, 2016). The talk will be free at the library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society had created the History Club.

It is designed for children to experience activities from the past, learn a new skill, play a game, and use their imagination.

The first event is Aug. 17 from 9am-noon at the South Lake Tahoe museum.
