El Dorado County Auditor-Controller Joe Harn is now chairman of the state Controller’s Advisory Committee of County Accounting Procedures.

Committee members are selected by state Controller Betty Yee. Harn has been on the committee since the mid-1990s. He also serves on the state Association of County Auditors Accounting Standards Committee.

The committee is made up of county administrative officers, county supervisors, and county auditor-controllers from across the state.

Under state law the state controller must prescribe accounting procedures to counties, but must do so after consulting with and receiving the approval of the advisory committee. The committee’s work generally consists of approving changes to various accounting guidelines and changes to the California Code of Regulations.

Harn said his time commitment as chair would consist of a couple of conference calls per year and a lot of reading.

·       South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue’s Brush 1 returned home Sept. 1 from the Chimney Fire in San Luis Obispo. SLTFR participates in the statewide mutual aid system. The city receives full reimbursement for its participation. The department calls back firefighters on their scheduled time off to provide normal coverage within the city.

·       El Dorado County Superior Court is extending hours for Small Claims Night Court services. Night court in South Lake Tahoe will be the third Monday in November, March and July from 5:30-6:30pm.

·          Douglas County Minden Library will be showing free movies geared toward adults and teens: Sept. 15 “Me Before You,” Sept 29 “A Beautiful Mind,” Oct. 13 “Rear Window,” an Oct. 27 “Insidious.” All shows begin at 2pm, with popcorn and beverages provided.

·       Nevada State Park rangers are leading a 2.2 mike hike around Spooner Lake for people and their dogs on Sept. 12 at 9am. Dogs must be on a leash and be social. Bring enough water for dogs and be prepared to pick up after her. Space is limited. Call 775.749.5980. The event is free; however park entry fees apply: $8 per vehicle for Nevada residents, $10 for non-residents.

·       The Tahoe Rim Trail Association on Oct. 11 is celebrating its 35th year of stewarding the TRT as well as the 15th anniversary of the original 165-mile opening. The event is at the Toyiabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley from 5-8pm. Go online to purchase the $50 tickets.

Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation is accepting applications with a special focus on local youth and environmental programs from local nonprofit organizations with a commitment to improving the quality of life in the Tahoe-Truckee community.

Last year, the foundation awarded more than $340,000 in grants and scholarships to 35 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofit organizations and programs, local students and community events.

Organizations submitting a grant request must serve the geographic areas of Truckee, Donner Summit, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar and the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Applications are due by noon on Oct. 31.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies, city and state transportation agencies, pedestrian advocates and walking clubs to promote public awareness aimed at drivers and pedestrians.

Officers will step up pedestrian safety operations with focused enforcement on collision causing factors involving motorists and pedestrians. Routine traffic patrols will focus efforts in trouble spots while special targeted patrols will also be deployed to crackdown on drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws meant to protect all roadway users.

September is California Pedestrian Safety Month. There were 813 pedestrians killed on California roadways in 2015, accounting for nearly 25 percent of all roadways deaths in the state, up from 17 percent 10 years earlier.

Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters will be presenting an informational program about ghost hunting at both branches of the Douglas County Public Library in October.

The Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters has taken part in paranormal research and investigations throughout the region. The group has explored many historic sites, including the old buildings of Virginia City. Team members have many true life ghost stories to tell; they will also discuss various historical foundations they collaborate with to keep history alive.

They will be at the Lake Tahoe branch on Oct. 1 at 2pm and the Minden branch on Oct. 15 at 2pm.

El Dorado County Superior Court is warning people of a scam.

Past or prospective jurors are never contacted by phone regarding failure to serve jury duty. All communication is done via U.S. mail or personal service.

No court jury staff or El Dorado County sheriff’s staff will ask past or prospective jurors to pay a fine or provide financial details including; credit card numbers, bank account(s), Social Security numbers or other personal information.

People who receive a telephone call from someone identifying himself or herself as a court employee or an employee of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office regarding a failure to appear for jury service, should call the Jury Commissioner’s office at 530.621.7469.

Between now and Sept. 12 law enforcement officers in Nevada, including Douglas County, are making a concerted effort to reduce the number of impaired drivers.

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies will be making efforts to achieve zero fatalities during the end of summer season. Drivers and riders are encouraged to know the law for blood alcohol levels and abide by the following guidelines:

• Designate a sober driver before drinking.
• Use a taxi, call a sober friend, family member or use public transportation.
• Call 911 if a drunken driver is seen on the road.
• Take the keys or assist in making other arrangements for someone who is about to drive who is impaired.

Impaired drivers have consistently been the most common cause of motor vehicle crashes resulting in injuries and deaths in Nevada, according to officials.

It wasn’t just fans of Sammy Hagar who were impressed with his recent performance at Harveys.

He gave a $2,500 check to Food Bank of El Dorado County.

Food Bank representatives Don and Debbie Abney went back stage where they had the opportunity to talk to Hagar about hunger in El Dorado County.
