There will be a commemorative ceremony to honor the victims and first responders of Sept. 11, 2001, on Sept. 11 at 11am at the American Legion Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

The ceremony will honor the innocent victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, airline flight takeovers and the American military service personnel who have died in the war against terrorism and other service members who continue to fight and die for our freedom.

The ceremony will also recognize emergency service personnel, including firefighters and law enforcement.

The 2nd annual Art & Soul Downtown Truckee Art Walk is Sept. 17 from 1-6pm.

Art & Soul combines visual art, live music, artist demonstrations, craft beer tastings, small bites and more.

There will be 30 stops celebrating Truckee’s artist community. A percentage of the proceeds will go to Arts for the Schools.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $42 at the door.

The Band, a set of four 4-foot-by-10-foot recycled steel sculptures, have been placed along Donner Pass Road for public viewing and consideration ahead of the Sept. 13 Town Council meeting.

The sculptures, on loan from Mountain Forge Inc., are at 10250 Donner Pass Road, across the street from the former Lululemon building. While no removal date has been confirmed, the public is encouraged to submit comments in writing by Sept. 12, 2016 or speak during the public comment section of the Town Council meeting on Sept. 13 at 6pm at 10183 Truckee Airport Road.

The 14th annual Oktoberfest at Squaw Valley is Sept. 24.

The village will transform into a miniature Bavaria featuring authentic German beer and food, Bavarian music and performances, and competitive Oktoberfest games.

All proceeds from beer sales benefit the High Sierra Lacrosse Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports student athletes developing in the sport of lacrosse. Last year’s festival raised more than $14,000 for High Sierra Lacrosse.

Entry into the 2-6pm event is free. Festival goers must be 21 years or older with a valid ID to purchase beer. Lederhosen and dirndls are encouraged.

·       The 14th annual Drug Store Project will be April 4 at Lake Tahoe Community College. The program teaches sixth-graders about the dangers of drug use. Volunteers are being lined up now. Go online to sign up to volunteer.

·       There are multiple bicycle events this month, so be on the lookout for riders: Sept. 11 — Tour De Tahoe – about 1,800 bikes riding clockwise around the lake with traffic; Sept. 18 — Edible Pedal – about 200 bikes going counterclockwise with traffic; Sept. 25 — OATBRAN, 50 bikes going counterclockwise with traffic.

Truckee is hosting a communitywide Sept. 11 commemoration on Sept. 11 at 11:30am at Truckee Regional Park

This is an opportunity for the community to come together to remember and honor those who died and those who served during the attacks 15 years ago.

Recognition of local public safety first responders will occur as well.

Speakers will include community leaders from the Truckee Town Council, Police Chief Adam McGill, representatives from the Truckee Fire Protection District, and the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Boy Scout Troop 267 will present the colors and a group from the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus will lead singing.

This event is graciously being organized and sponsored by the Truckee Lutheran Presbyterian Church and is open to everyone.

PaintCare is hosting a one-day paint recycling event in Truckee on Sept. 24.

The 9am-1pm event will be at Truckee Tahoe Airport.

Households and businesses from anywhere in the Truckee area may drop off leftover house paint, stain, or varnish—even if it’s 20 years old. All brands of latex or oil-based paint are accepted.

Only paint containers that are 5 gallons in size or smaller will be accepted. Containers must have original manufacturer labels. Leaking or empty containers and aerosol spray paints will not be accepted.

Hazardous waste or chemicals will not be collected at this event, such as paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, spackle, glue, adhesive, roofing tar, pesticides, and cleaning products.

Teen Court is looking for El Dorado County students in grades 8-12 on the South Shore to participated in the program.

Teens will serve as court personnel for real cases in which a minor has committed an offense, admitted the offense and chosen to be judged by his/her peers.

Orientation training is Sept. 29 from 5-6:30pm at the courthouse in South Lake Tahoe.

Teen Court hearings in South Lake Tahoe are Thursday nights at 5pm beginning Oct. 20 and ending in May.
