The full closure of Highway 89 near Emerald Bay has been lifted.

The work is part of the $13 million Highway 89 Emerald Bay water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to Upper Emerald Bay Road.

Work will continue throughout the project under daytime one-way traffic control at various locations. Project completion is expected later this fall, but weather or unexpected events could extend the work into next season.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting its annual open house on Oct. 8 from 10am-2pm.

This will be to commemorate Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Station No. 1 is at 1252 Ski Run Blvd. — participate in a fire extinguisher demo and squirt a hose.

Fire Station No. 2 is at 2951 Lake Tahoe Blvd. — meet paramedics and see ambulances.

Fire Station No. 3 is at 2101 Lake Tahoe Blvd. — Smokey Bear will be there.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe has money to give to nonprofits on the South Shore that help women and children.

The service club will consider new programs, improvements and enhancements to current programs as well as supporting programs that have been proven effective.

Grant applications will be available Oct. 1. The grant application, criteria and instructions are online. The deadline to apply is Nov. 15.

All of SISLT’s grant funding comes directly from the organization’s wine tasting, which is Nov. 11 this year.

The registration process for Sierra Nevada College’s bachelor’s degree program at Lake Tahoe Community College remains open. There will be an open house Oct. 3 where prospective students can learn about the program.

The first class enrollment is projected at 25 students.

The open house is from 5:30-7pm in the Aspen Room at LTCC.

The partnership between SNC and LTCC will bring an affordable four-year business degree option to LTCC’s campus.

Caltrans on Monday started a $2.6 million grinding and paving project on more than nine miles of Highway 50.

The pavement rehabilitation project is designed to extend the life of the roadway and improve ride quality, is from Strawberry over Echo Summit to just west of Johnson Pass Road. Grinding and paving will take place around the clock Monday through 7pm Thursday of this week and again Monday through Thursday of next week under one-way traffic control.

Other work to be performed after the grinding and paving includes adding rumble strips and striping.

·       The 10th annual Keep Sierra Clean Day is Oct. 9. Registration begins at 10am at the resort. Lunch and music are provided after the mountain is cleaned up.

The American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe is having a toy-food drive for Christmas Cheer.

Drop off new, unwrapped toys and/or non-perishable food items on Oct. 1 from noon-5pm at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Over the years, Christmas Cheer has provided thousands of toys and meals to local families.

North Tahoe Fire District and Placer County Tahoe Community Development Resource Agency are rolling out a pilot program to offer simple building permit approvals from both agencies in one place.

North Tahoe Fire District staff will be available on Tuesdays from 8am-4pm at the Tahoe CDRA building in Tahoe City. Fire district staff will be available at the front counter to review and approve applications that do not require Tahoe Regional Planning Agency permits.

Since these permits must be reviewed and approved by the fire district and county, the new service expedites the permit process.

Residences and businesses located outside North Tahoe Fire District’s jurisdiction will need to obtain permit approvals from their area’s fire district office.

The Sierra State Parks Foundation’s third annual A Liar’s Cruise is Oct. 8.

Tall tales and mysterious truths will be told while never-ending hors d’oeuvres and free-flowing bubbly at served. Storytellers will spin their yarns while cruising along Tahoe’s West Shore on the Tahoe Gal. Guests will be the judge and guess who’s telling the truth.

·     During the 8th annual Great Sierra River Cleanup last weekend more than 12 tons of trash was pulled from the rivers, lakes, and streams of the Sierra Nevada.

·       TAMBA had 153 riders on the 6th annual Rose to Toads ride. About $6,550 was raised, with 100 of the funds going to trails in Lake Tahoe.
