Scam artists are calling people claiming to be a deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The individual tells the resident that they failed to show up for jury duty and have an active warrant. The impersonator even states dates of notices and case numbers.

The impersonator instructs the residents to wire money or to purchase a pre-paid credit card and they will call back to obtain the credit card numbers.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office does not telephone residents to advise them of warrants or subpoenas for jury duty.  The impersonator’s caller ID may appear as if it from a local number or from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

TRYP will host a South Lake Tahoe City Council forum on Oct. 19 from 6-7:30pm.

This is an opportunity to learn more about the 10 candidates running for City Council. The night will include a moderated question-and-answer period followed by questions from the audience.

It will be at the Tahoe Beach Retreat conference center.

There will be a forum Oct. 19 for South Tahoe Public Utility District candidates.

It will be an opportunity for the public to hear statements from the four candidates on the November ballot: Kirk David, Nick Exline, Kelly Sheehan and Randy Vogelgesang. Two seats are open.

Each candidate will be allowed to give an opening statement, answer questions posed by the audience and then provide a closing statement. The 6pm forum is anticipated to last 90 minutes.

The district board room is located at 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District will continue its curbside chipping service through October.

This free service assists homeowners by converting slash and cut limbs into wood chips for use on their property.

This action reduces flammable vegetation and helps homeowners create defensible space to protect their property from the threat of wildfire.

The program is offered to district residents of El Dorado County, Fallen Leaf, and Alpine County.

Motorists on Highway 267 can expect delays the rest of this week as Caltrans paves at Old Brockway Road and Soaring Way.

Maintenance crews will close alternate lanes and use one-way traffic controls from 7am-5pm Oct. 5-6 and possibly Friday form 7am-4pm.

Crews will grind and pave the deteriorated and cracked asphalt. New striping will also be placed after the paving operations are completed.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be partnering with the Drug Enforcement Agency in hosting a drug take back on Oct. 22.

This is the public’s opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs. Pet medication is also accepted.

Vehicle technologies in the United States and around the world are in a phase of rapid change. The last six years have seen the introduction of self-driving cars, mass-production of electric vehicles, and new vehicle-sharing.

Electric vehicles are coming and the Lake Tahoe region has a chance to become the electric highway in the Sierra. Millions visit the region and transportation has impacted air quality and become the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. To counteract the tendency “to love a place to death”, regional planners are leading an effort to encourage the use of plug-in electric vehicles.

A talk on Oct. 18 will allow people to learn more about:

• Efforts under way to bring electric vehicles to the Tahoe-Truckee region
• Myths and facts about electric vehicle ownership
• Vehicle options and incentives for buyers.
