The 10th Annual Grapes & Gates, an evening of wine tasting and gourmet food to benefit the Heavenly Ski & Snowboard Foundation’s Scholarship Fund, is at Edgewood Tahoe beginning at 6pm May 11.

The event will feature local restaurants including Cafe Fiore, Cork & More, Embassy Suites, Latin Soul, Riva Grill and Thai One On. A variety of wineries will be represented.

A silent auction and raffle will be avaialbe.

Sierra Nevada College presents the Fifth Annual Tahoe Poetry Slam on April 29 at 7pm in Patterson Hall.

The evening is free and open to all. There are cash prizes for the top three competitors.

The event is in Incline Village.

South Lake Tahoe AAUW and Lake Tahoe Community College are co-sponsoring a Math and Science Career Day for girls in grades 6-8 on April 30 from 9am-3pm at the South Lake Tahoe college.

The goal is to encourage middle school girls to become interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

The keynote speaker will be an orthodontist with workshops featuring local women currently working in geology, wildlife biology, medicine, mathematics, physics and chemistry.

The event will feature hands-on learning and real-life connections to careers in math and science.

The first 60 girls to sign up will have the opportunity to attend this event and familiarize themselves with the college campus.

Lunch is provided free to all attendees.

What do black and yellow and bleu have in common? Billboard’s Top 100 hit “Black and Yellow” will be performed by Pittsburgh hip hopper Wiz Khalifa at MontBleu casino in Stateline on June 21.

Khalifa has been selling out stadiums across the country following the release of Rolling Papers, his freshman album. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard “Top 200 Albums,” second only to Britney Spears’ recent release, and was at No. 1 on Billboard’s “Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums” and “Top Rap Albums.” His two most recent singles, “No Sleep” and “Roll Up” are currently No. 17 and No. 28, respectively, on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Born Cameron Thomaz, Wiz Khalifa began recording and producing records in his father’s Oklahoma studio at the age of 12. When he moved Pittsburgh as a teen, Khalifa laid down the groundwork to begin a solo career by recording music in a local studio, I.D. Labs. Khalifa stood out among the studio’s regulars, bringing him to the attention of Benjy Grinberg, a former executive assistant to L.A. Reid at Arista Records, who had started up a new independent label, Rostrum Records, and signed Khalifa.

Ski Run neighborhood businesses are sponsoring an Easter egg hunt for kids.

Events will include pictures with the Easter bunny with kids and/or animals, animal owner look alike contest and a cake walk.

The event is April 23 from 11am-2pm on Ski Run Boulevard at Larch Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The egg hunt starts at 11:15am.

Kirkwood Mountain Classic at the Kirkwood Ski Area/Bike Park is July 23.

This cross country race is part of the Sierra Cup Mountain Bike Series.

All proceeds from this event go to TAMBA.

The race will also include a Le Mans start Super-D race in the afternoon.

Squaw Valley is hosting the second annual nationwide Helly Hansen Professional Ski Patrol Olympics April 26-28.

Ski patrollers from all over North America will be competing for glory and $10,000 in cash and other prizes such as avalanche probes, backpacks compliments of Helly Hansen, Alpine Traverse, Recco and BCA.

Competitions will include a randonée race, beacon competition, GS race, sled race, bamboo throw and simulated bomb throw. All competitions will be visible from the Cornice II snow lounge and BBQ area where spectators can partake in the excitement and suspense.

New this year, the Helly Hansen Professional Ski Patrol Olympics has added an Avalanche Rescue Dog competition where resorts’ top dogs will go head-to-head in a two-day challenge. Avalanche rescue dogs are an important component of any patrol team. The K-9 competition will include a timed retrieval of buried objects.

Registration for the event will take place April 26 from 6-9pm at the Papoose Discovery Center located across from Cornice Cantina. Registration to compete costs $89 per patroller and includes a two-day lift ticket to Squaw Valley and participation in the events.

A discounted entry fee is available for patrollers with Squaw Valley season passes.

Spectators are invited to watch the competition and enjoy the only the snow barbecue in the Cornice II Bowl.

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center’s 8th annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration is May 6 from 5-10pm at Heavenly’s California Lodge.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-12 and free for kids under 6. There will be raffles, a silent auction, and music. Participating restaurants include: Latin Soul Restaurant, Chevy’s Fresh Mex, Rigoberto’s Taco Shop, Taco Bell, Lake Taco, Los Portales, Taco Taqueria, La Promesa and Los Mexicanos Restaurant.

The Sugar Pine Foundation will be planting fungus-resistant sugar pine seedlings in the Angora Fire burn scar on April 30 from 10am-noon.

Seedlings, tools, instruction and light refreshments will be provided.

Bring the family, a trowel or a shovel if you can. Carpooling is encouraged.
