Hailed in 2006 by Rolling Stone magazine as its “Artist to Watch,” Carlile’s emotionally powerful songwriting and acoustic guitar work has crossed all boundaries between small venues and large stadiums, opening for such acts as Dave Matthews, Shawn Colvin, and India Arie.

The Tahoe City Parks and Recreation Department “Bike Derby” is going into its 4th year at the Rideout Community Center May 14 from 11am-2pm.

The Tahoe City Recreation Department along with the other hosting associations have an afternoon planned full of food, games, bike safety and repair stations, obstacle course, and even the “Tour de Rideout.”

This free event is the day before professional cyclists ride around Lake Tahoe.

Classic boats from a classic era. That’s what guests will discover at the 2011 South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic July 29-30 at the Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club.

The STWBC is one of the West’s largest classic boat shows, and this year the headliner will be White Smoke which was originally delivered to South Lake Tahoe’s Pope Estate and is currently part of the Tahoe Maritime Museum’s collection. White Smoke is a 1930, 30-foot Sea Lyon, model 45 triple cockpit runabout. The George A. Pope family enjoyed their home and the boat on Lake Tahoe for years before finally gifting the estate to the U.S. Forest Service.

While White Smoke will command center stage at the STWBC, it will have plenty of company. More than 65 antique and classic boats will be on display at the Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club.

A new attraction this year will be a kit boat, newly built by Tahoe City Boy Scout Troop No. 266 which will be on display in the sponsor tent area. The boat is a project being built by the Scouts and their fathers with guidance and support from ACBS member John Lahti of Tahoe City.

Throughout Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, guests at the Wooden Boat Classic will hear the thunder of these classic beauties while having the opportunity to stroll through the sponsor and charity booths and buy a memento of the day in the Antique & Classic Boat Society’s Ships Store. Snacks, drinks and a barbecue lunch will be available at gourmet refreshment booths. 

The Tahoe Maritime Museum will also have their boat in the marina and will be giving rides to families who join the museum at the boat show.

As part of its Chamber EDucation program, the North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce is hosting a “Disabled Access” Seminar May 3, 1-4pm at the Tahoe City Public Utility District’s Board Room, 221 Fairway Drive, Tahoe City.

The seminar is geared for commercial business owners and tenants and will cover the history of disabled access regulations and the Americans with Disability Act as it pertains to buildings, the difference between California Title 24 Disabled Access Code Provisions and the ADA, Placer County building permit deadlines and time lines, and SB1608 and California access.

Attendees will also take away steps to evaluate their business compliance with all ADA requirements, how to reduce the risk of litigation, and strategies for dealing with lawsuits if an individual gets sued for ADA access violations.

Speakers include Chief Building Official Tim Wegner of Placer County, Certified Access Specialist Mike Gardner of CASp Inspections and Tony DeCristoforo of Stoel Rives Law Offices.

This seminar is free to North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce members and is $20/person for non-members.

Darnell Holloway, head of Business Outreach from Yelp, will be the guest speaker June 16 from noon-2pm at Harveys Convention Center.

South Lake Tahoe BMX Association will show the 90-minute film “Joe Kid on a Stingray — the history of BMX” on May 6 at 7pm.

Tahoe Arts Project is bringing Andean music trio Chasinakuy to Lake Tahoe Community College on April 30 at 7pm at Duke Theatre.

Chaskinakuy will be performing for local students April 25-29 as part of Tahoe Arts Project’s performing arts in the schools program.

Athletes will be tested on an extreme on-mountain obstacle course on Squaw Valley’s legendary terrain for the 11th Tough Mudder event Sept. 17-18.

Chosen for its challenging landscape, Squaw Valley is one of 10 Tough Mudder venues across the country and this fall marks the second time the endurance event has come to Northern California.

Mudders will scale the Sierra throughout the 10- mile long course complete with 19 obstacles.

The military-style event challenges are strategically placed across the peaks that make up Squaw Valley. With more than 10,000 men and women expected to participate, those interested are encouraged to register early for the event with other comrades. Spectator tickets are also available for friends and family who wish to cheer on participants and enjoy the resort.

The top 5 percent of finishers will qualify for the World’s Toughest Mudder, a 48-hour death race Dec. 17–18 in Englishtown, N.J., in which the winner will receive $10,000.

Dragonfly Restaurant will host the Arts for the Schools’ 6th Annual Student Art Show May 5 from 4-6pm.

For those who choose to stay for dinner, Dragonfly will offer half-off all entrees.

This year’s show titled “Artists in Bloom” will showcase more than 400 pieces of Tahoe Truckee children’s artwork. Art pieces were selected from a variety of elementary school classes throughout the region, including artwork created in the Arts For the Schools Artist-in-Residence program.

The art pieces, which include drawings, portraits and perspectives, will be on sale and proceeds benefit Arts for the Schools.
