Session No. 2 of a newly formed work group committed to the development of community-based services for people with disabilities around Lake Tahoe will be June 27 from 1-3pm.

Through the efforts of this group the goal is the needs that exist for opportunities and options for this population can be met by coming together creatively through sharing ideas and resources.

In session No. 1 people identified some of the things community has and identified some of the things it needs.

In the upcoming session the following issues will be addressed:

1) Within existing services, how do they currently work together/with families?

2) What ideas do we have to generate new inter-agency partnerships?

The Cork and More in South Lake Tahoe is hosting a wine tasting event to benefit the Tahoe Tallac Association on June 16 at 7pm. You can purchase tickets directly through the Cork and More — $15 in advance, $18 at the door. They will be featuring wines from Spain.

Sierra Nevada Alliance and bird expert Sheryl Ferguson will host Birding in Lake Tahoe on May 28 from 8-11am at Pope Beach.

The event is a fundraiser for the Sierra Nevada Alliance, which is asking for a $25 suggested donation. But all are encouraged to come so contribute what you can.

Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for American Hiking Society’s 19th annual National Trails Day event on June 4.

Celebrate the start of the trail season by volunteering to build trail or by learning more about Leave No Trace principles. The event begins at Van Sickle Bi-State Park off Lake Parkway in South Lake Tahoe.

Enjoy free coffee donated by Seattle’s Best, then help the TRTA build trail for the first time this season. Volunteers of all skill levels and physical abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate — no prior experience necessary.

Volunteers will receive free lunch sponsored by REI. The event will conclude at 4pm with a volunteer party at Explore Tahoe, including free food and drink. This event opens the third trail-building season of a multiyear project, which will connect the Tahoe Rim Trail with Van Sickle State Park, reroute the TRT off paved roads, and provide stunning views of Lake Tahoe to more people. Volunteers must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, boots, and work gloves; bring sunscreen, bug spray, water and a backpack. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association will provide hard hats, trail building tools and crew leaders.

Leave No Trace Activities: 10am-noon, Explore Tahoe

Learn about the seven Leave No Trace principles in a fun, interactive format. The hands-on activities in this program are appropriate for all ages from kindergarten through high school and adults. Leave No Trace principles are relevant for everyone – hiking, biking, camping, backpacking, climbing, skiing, or even just walking through the local park. Activities will take place at Explore Tahoe, 4114 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Classic chrome polished cars, rock ‘n’ roll and Lake Tahoe will make for a Hot August Nights to remember, Aug. 6-9 at MontBleu in Stateline.

MontBleu will be the headquarters for show-n-shines, car exhibits, exclusive car auctions, cruises and an outdoor pavilion with food, beverages and great oldies music. Take in the sun with the top down, and then at night step inside MontBleu to unwind Tahoe-style, with music, dining and a host of shows, including Aaron Lewis Aug. 6 and KC & The Sunshine Band Aug. 7 in the MontBleu Theater.

The KidZone Museum, a nonprofit organization nationally recognized for its exemplary children museum efforts, partners with Squaw Valley Institute to offer a lively, fun and informative presentation by Stuart Brown on the importance of play in an individual’s life.

The presentation, which includes a Q&A, is June 5 at 4:30pm at the Resort at Squaw Creek. The cost is $10. Tickets may be purchased online.

Brown will discuss topics such as what triggers an adult or child’s emotional engagement with the world, holds our attention and helps to craft each person’s unique human brain. He’ll also explore the growing data on the relationship of play to an individual’s performance, emotional regulation and overall well-being. Attendees will learn what highlights the evolution, neurobiology and characteristics of play behaviors and their embedment in the survival circuitry of the brain. The consequences of play deprivation will also be discussed.

Brown is director of the National Institute for Play and author of “PLAY: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul”.
