The Village at Squaw Valley and Sons of Norway, Snowshoe Thompson Lodge 6-078, are hosting a dedication celebration honoring the Sierra legend Snowshoe Thompson at Squaw Valley at 1pm June 25 in the Events Plaza of The Village at Squaw Valley.

The dedication is for the 13-foot copper sculpture of Snowshoe Thompson created by artist Richard Gill of Nevada City. The sculpture depicts the legendary character who carried the mail through Sierra snows, from Placerville to Genoa for more than 20 winters.

The event will include a brief history of Snowshoe Thompson and a reading of Gills’ poem, Norwegian dancing and instruction provided by the Kropps, Norwegian singing by Phil Walker and a special performance by Snowshoe Thompson impersonator, Steve Hale.

Red Hut on Ski Run Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe is having a burger night June 15 from 5-8pm for Tahoe Douglas Rotary.

Heather Segale of UC Davis Research and Education Programs at Lake Tahoe will be presenting information concerning the current clarity of the lake, invasive species, and climate change at Lake Tahoe.

The talk is June 9 at 5:30pm at the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood.

Winemaker Stephen Tebb from Robert Craig Winery will discuss the science and art of winemaking from the soil to the glass on June 16 at 6pm at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village (on the campus of Sierra Nevada College).

With an emphasis on mountain-grown fruit, he will discuss how the geology, geography and climate affect the type and style of wine produced. Tebb will go through the various stages of wine production from harvest parameters to fermentation dynamics to cooperage determinations and ultimately bottling considerations.

Guests will also learn how to taste wine like an expert.

Trails and Vistas Art Hike on Sept 17. and Sept. 18 celebrates art and the environment at Spooner Lake, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

Tours begin every 15 minutes beginning at noon on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

Tickets are $30. They go on sale July 1 online.

Reflections & Rhythms embodies the creative process and captures the sights, sounds and experience of the transformative art hike.

Participants will walk along a gentle 2.5-mile long trail in groups of up to 30 people, pausing at live music and dance performances, sculptures, poetry readings and innovative artistic expressions along the guided hike.

Nonprofit Trails and Vistas’ mission is to create art experiences in nature that inspire environmental awareness.

The Friends of Ski Run will be hosting the second annual Spring Ski Run Cleanup Day on June 11 from 11am-12:30pm. Anyone interested in helping keep Ski Run looking topnotch should meet at the Blue Angel Cafe at 1132 Ski Run Blvd. before 11am.

It is time to get spooked during the third annual Historical Haunted Walking Tour in downtown Truckee on Oct. 20 and Oct. 21.

Old-timers will tell historic tales of the Wild West, ladies of nocturnal delight will sing a tune and entertaining characters will share titillating folklore along the nearly two-hour walk. Covering Truckee’s most historic sites, the tour will entertain guests from near and far with spooky legends and unsolved mysteries. Find out what loggers loved most about Jibboom Street, the first road built in Truckee.

Learn how the Truckee Regulators administered justice years ago. Discover the never-told-before story of the world’s most famous Lilliputian in this old railroad town.

The Richardson House was a favorite site on the 2010 tour. Built by a lumber baron for his wife in the late 1880s, the house featured a performance by Maggie Richardson’s “ghost.”

Maggie, the first wife of the house, was tormented by her son’s death, and her story, like each memorable performance along the guided tour, was captivating.

The tour benefits the Truckee Donner Historical Society and Trails & Vistas, two well-respected, Truckee-based nonprofit organizations.
