Free Expression Painting classes are designed to help children develop and discover the excitement of painting, and the instinctual urge to play with color and form. Gina Stowell’s Expression Painting sessions share art history and painting techniques followed by a free painting session encouraging creativity and self-expression. Students should wear sunscreen and a hat, and bring a healthy snack. Space is limited. Students should arrive at 9:30 each morning to check in.

The sessions are July 11-15 from 1am-1pm at the Valhalla Grand Lawn of the Tallac Site on the South Shore.

Cost is $150 per child for the week.

Three contributors, one night: Janet Smith, Joseph Flannery and Ruth Rhodes will read passages from their essays in “Permanent Vacation” at the El Dorado Arts Council in Placerville on July 29 at 7pm.

South Lake Tahoe is beginning to schedule neighborhood meetings. The city wants to partner with local citizens to help increase communication with neighbors and businesses to help facilitate improvements in their neighborhoods.

The July 20 meeting is from 6:30-8pm for the neighborhoods of Al Tahoe, Bijou Pines and Pioneer Village at the Senior Center (3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.)

The Aug. 23 meeting is from 6:30-8pm at Bijou Elementary School multipurpose room (3501 Spruce Ave.) The neighborhoods are Rancho Bijou and Bijou Acres.

Join UC Davis, the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and Master Gardeners for a free Green Thumb Gardening class on July 10 from 2 to 5pm at the Tahoe City Field Station (Historic Hatchery) for backyard composting, vegetable gardening Tahoe style and free native plant drawing.

The dog-friendly Annual Tail & Ale Festival is July 8 from 5-9pm at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay.

Guests taste beer, get a commemorative glass and a sample platter of fish tacos, jambalaya and grilled salmon. Tickets are $30.
