Scott Lankford, author of “Tahoe Beneath the Surface”, presents an illustrated talk on the stories of some of Tahoe’s most notable residents and visitors over the years.
The event takes place on the lawn at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe on July 15 at 7:30pm.

Jon Foley, director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, will present “Solutions for a Cultivated Planet: Learning to Feed 9 Billion People While Sustaining the Global Environment” on July 28 from 6:30-8pm at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach.

The Professional Disc Golf Association and the Tahoe Disc Golf Association are hosting the 2011 King of the Lake event July 15-17 at Tahoe Vista Regional Park, Zephyr Cove Park, Turtle Rock Park and Bijou Community Park.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association as one of nine premier events in the 2011 PDGA National Tour Elite Series, presented by Vibram Golf Discs.
The tournament format will have competitors playing four rounds, with a final round of nine holes on Sunday. The Pro lead group will begin final round play on July 17 between 1-2pm at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe. Admission is free and the first 100 spectators will receive a golf disc courtesy of Vibram.

Squaw Valley saddles up again for Wild Wild West Weekend with a host of Western-themed events.
Wild Wild West Weekend offers adults and kids the opportunity to channel their inner-cowboys at the High Camp Corral. Pony rides, a petting zoo, authentic Western-style barbecues, and two days of live music are all part of the July 23-24 weekend.

Children are invited to spend Aug. 13 with scientists learning about the unique ecology, function, restoration and preservation of Lake Tahoe.
The 12th annual Children’s Environmental Science Day is a free event sponsored by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.
More than 20 interactive science activities hosted by organizations around the region will be available for children ages 6 and up. The day will include interactive science demonstrations by UC Davis scientists, local agency and nonprofit organization staff, and AmeriCorps members. Hands-on activities are designed for the whole family to enjoy.
Get up close and personal with fish and microscopic zooplankton from Lake Tahoe, learn about invasive species in the Tahoe basin, test the water quality of a stream and observe mosquito fish eating their prey. This exciting event will bring together many of our community partners who are committed to protecting Lake Tahoe and its watershed.
Children’s Environmental Science Day is at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is located on the Sierra Nevada College campus at 291 Country Club Drive in Incline Village, off Highway 28.

Trails and Vistas’ annual nature art hike is Sept. 17-18 at Spooner Lake at the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.
Volunteers make Trails and Vistas possible. This year is no exception, as more than 50 volunteers are needed to ensure a successful event.
This month Trails and Vistas will offer a volunteer workshop titled “Finding Your Voice” on July 24 from 9-11:30am for volunteer trail leader development. This workshop will focus on storytelling skills, teaching how to create small group trust and support, and build confidence for public speaking.
No experience is needed to become a trail leader.

TAMBA trail work day is July 16.
The mountain bike group has a Volunteer Service Agreement with the U.S. Forest Service and this will be our first official trail building day.
Help build armored berms, strengthen the sandy loose areas of trail, and identify where to build additional features on the top portions of Armstrong connector. Depending on the number of volunteers we have showing up, a crew may also be sent up Armstrong trail to fix what winter destroyed.
Show up at the main bottom parking lot of Corral (just past Saxon Creek bridge) at 9am and then be shuttled to the top to start the trail work.
This trail day is the first of our monthly build days under the VSA with the Forest Service. Even a few hours of volunteer time will go a long way.

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe has been working hard since the Mutt Strut in October — raising funds raffling several snowboards during the long winter, issuing more than 40 spay-neuter vouchers to bring the total in the past seven years to more than 1,500.
The next fundraiser (dinner and drinks) is July 19 from 6-9pm at the Flight Deck restaurant at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit ACT’s spay-neuter program and the El Dorado County Animal Shelter. There will also be a raffle.
The Animal Coalition of Tahoe is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that raises funds to help local residents spay and neuter their dogs and cats in an effort to reduce the population of unwanted pets. Darius Rucker is confirmed to replace Lionel Richie to headline the special “celebrity night” show at the Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at the Harveys Outdoor Arena on July 16.
Javier Colon, winner of NBC’s hit show “The Voice”, will open the show.
Richie is unable to perform due to an injury to his vocal chords.
Rucker first gained fame as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Hootie & The Blowfish.
In early 2008, Rucker signed to Capital Records Nashville and began his hugely successful career in country music. His first solo single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” (which he co-wrote with Clay Mills), debuted at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Rucker also made his Grand Ole Opry debut in July 2008.
