Emerald Bay State Park offers a behind-the-scenes tour of Vikingsholm Castle and talk with longtime park historian Helen Smith, who frequented the property as a child, on July 28 from 6-8pm as part of their Conversations with History’s program. Tickets are $40/person.
Calstar’s 6th annual Flying 5K and Kids Fun Run is Aug. 27 at 8:30am.
The 5K course starts on the runway, crosses a stream and goes off road onto trails.

The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra (Toccata) continues 2011 Big Blue Summer MusicFest with a series that celebrates Baroque Masters. The program includes works by G.P. Teleman, Handel, Vivaldi, and features J.S. Bach’s Cantata No. 140 – “Wachet Auf” featuring the Toccata Chorus and vocal soloists.

Reno Gay Pride festival is 15th annual event is Aug. 19-20.

Adventure Risk Challenge’s annual benefit poetry reading and reception is 5:30pm Aug. 2 at the Cedar House Sport Hotel in Truckee.
Ten youth participants of ARC’s 40-day literacy and outdoor immersion program will recite their works at this event.
ARC’s interactive approach is rooted in rigorous academic instruction combined with outdoor education. Historically, summer program participants surpass their peers academically: 92 percent pass the California High School Exit Exam (compared to a 72 percent pass rate for socio-economically disadvantaged youth and 81 percent overall) and 77 percent attend a two or four-year college or university.
The reading and reception are free and open to the public.

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority will have its regular annual meeting July 29 at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport.
At 10:30am, the JPA will adjourn into a continued special meeting from July 13 to further discuss Measure R, the revision of Measure S that will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Measure R discussion will include a proposed ballot argument in favor of Measure R, and the process and schedule for appointing Bicycle and Fields Advisory committees. The committees would be appointed if voters approve Measure R.
Aberrations await and spirits linger during a two-hour walking tour Aug. 20 and Sept. 24 through the historic district of Carson City.
History and storytelling are the orders of the day on this tour through Victorian-style homes and neighborhoods, where reality and legend come together, leaving ghost walkers to wonder what is truth and what is fiction.

Tour guides will tell colorful stories about the buildings and its owners inside the humble and not-so-humble abodes, of yesteryear while walking along the historic Kit Carson Trail featuring 1800s Victorian-style homes. Some of the stops along the tour include:
— Ferris Mansion, home of George Ferris Jr., inventor of the Ferris Wheel for the Chicago World Columbian Exposition in 1893.
— Orion Clemens House, home of Mark Twain’s older brother who served as secretary to Territorial Gov. William Nye, was built in 1863 and was called “the Governor’s Mansion,” though the real Governor’s Mansion wouldn’t be built until 1909.
— Rinckel Mansion, built by the fortune of Mathias Rinckel, a forward-looking meat magnate who struck it rich supplying Gold Rushers and Lake Tahoe lumbermen.
— Lee House, also known as Judge Clark J. Guild home, Lee, a prominent doctor and surgeon for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, built the home from the lumber of the razed school on the same sites.
— St. Teresas Catholic Church, the first in Carson City, which was built in 1871.
Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant — a 1990 South Tahoe High grad — will be giving a talk to area youth July 28 at 9:30am in the theater at Lake Tahoe Community College.
