“Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time” will be shown at the outdoor theater at the Sagehen Creek Field Station, north of Truckee on Aug. 23. The movie will begin at 6:30pm.

All are welcome to bring a picnic and eat during the movie.

Aldo Leopold was a U.S. Forest Service employee and developed important conservation ideas that were new to his time but still applicable today. He is probably best known for his book “A Sand County Almanac”. This movie was produced by the Forest Service and the Aldo Leopold Foundation.

It is free.

Wine lovers can enjoy early fall in the Sierra at the 23rd annual Alpen Wine Festival on Sept. 4 from 2-5pm at the Village at Squaw Valley.

All proceeds from the festival benefit Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, a national nonprofit organization sponsoring lifestyle empowerment programs for people with MS and their support partners.

For a $40 donation, guests can enjoy wine from more than 40 Northern California vineyards as live jazz from the Jackie Landrum Band and the Tristan Selzler Trio is played.

Guests can peruse the silent auction and raffle, which includes Squaw Valley lodging packages, shopping sprees, restaurant gift certificates, lift tickets, art and unique wines by the bottle and case.

Last year the Alpen Wine Festival raised more than $25,000 for Can Do MS.

Tickets for the event will be available on site at 1pm. The majority of wines served at the event will be available for purchase at Uncorked at Squaw in the Village at Squaw Valley.

Each year, the National Pony Express Association re-creates the Pony Express of 1860-1861 by riding from St. Joseph, Mo., to Sacramento. Mormon Station State Historic Park is hosting this event in Genoa on Aug. 26 at 8am.

The national, 10-day, 24 hour-a-day event includes more than 600 riders stationed at intervals to relay a mochila (mailbag) filled with Pony Express Mail for the 1,966 mile ride.

The Pony Express rider will ride into Mormon Station’s stockade, exchange the mochila and see the next rider ride out to the next stop. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., is scheduled to be the rider leaving Mormon Station.

Although the rider is scheduled to arrive at Mormon Station around 8:30am, because of the distance traveled, it’s difficult to predict exactly when they arrive.

The inaugural Rose to Toads Mountain Bike Ride is Sept. 4 starting at 7:30am.

TAMBA is calling this self-supported event an epic ride from the North Shore to the South Shore.

There are spots to shorten the 60-plus mile ride.

Meet at the Mt. Rose Tahoe Rim Trail trailhead.

This ride encompasses the Tahoe Rim Trail, Flume, Freel Peak, Star Lake and Toads.

Learn about the evolution of Tahoe travel from renowned U.S. Forest Service historian and recreation officer Don Lane on Aug. 24 at 8pm at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater on the South Shore

Lane knows Tahoe and had published “Tahoe Tales of Bygone Days and Memorable Pioneers,” which will be part of the talk.

The talk is free, but donations will be accepted by the Tahoe Heritage Foundation to support the Taylor Creek Summer Speaker Series.

What do you get when you combine networking, local charity, and a bar with karaoke — a Tahoe Regional Young Professionals’ August FUNdraiser at Murphy’s Irish Pub on Aug. 25 at 7:30pm.

It is a benefit Christmas Cheer All Year, the food bank in South Lake Tahoe.

The outdoor patio will feature an evening of karaoke and giving back to the community.

TRYP is a new organization created to connect Tahoe’s next generation, while helping the Lake Tahoe community. The young professionals encourage people to bring any type of donation for Christmas Cheer, including cash, non-perishable items like canned food, rice, soups, vegetables or even toys gearing up for the holidays. Cash is the easiest item for them since they use it to buy from the Nevada Food Bank.

In addition to Murphy’s offering a venue for this event, the South Lake Tahoe restaurant will write a check to Christmas Cheer.

Next month, the group will organize a TRYP mixer, incorporating a full moon hike/stroll on Sept. 12. In addition, they’ll pair up with Great River Sierra Cleanup to help collect trash around the Lake Tahoe Basin on Sept. 17.

The Sierra Summer Festival presents families in the Tahoe-Reno region with a new entertainment option Aug. 26-28 at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Event’s Center. The event, which is indoors and out, features live entertainment, freestyle motocross, a carnival midway, demolition derby and more.

Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults, in advance.
