Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation’s annual Celebration of Education is May 20 at the grand Construction, Arts and Transportation Academy at South Tahoe High School. The public is invited.

The reception will begin at 5:30pm in honor of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District retirees, plus preview tours of the new building.

Food will be served by the culinary arts students of STHS.

Entertainment will include the Blue Ribbon Choir from STHS and the Tahoe Belles from STMS, both conducted by Paul Kushner, plus other musicians from the district’s bands and orchestras. There also will be a student art exhibit.

Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by May 12. They are available online.

Recreation, forest health, fuels reduction, wildlife habitat, watershed restoration and aquatic habitat will be the subject of meetings next month conducted by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the U.S. Forest Service.

The public is encouraged to attend to learn about and comment on the forest plan revision, which is agency’s blue print of sorts for the future.

The first meeting is May 11 at the LTBMU Forest Supervisor’s Office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe. The other is May 13 at the North Tahoe Conference Center, 8318 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach. Both are from 5-7pm.

Each meeting will begin with an overview of the process and time line for revising the forest plan, after which participants will have the opportunity to talk with staff members regarding alternatives under consideration.

The LTBMU was in the process of revising its forest plan when the 2008 planning rule was enjoined by the U.S. District Court. The 2000 planning rule, under which the LTBMU is now proceeding, requires the Forest Service to develop a draft environmental impact statement that analyzes several alternatives for forest plan revision.

The LTBMU has engaged the public extensively to get input on how the plan should be revised. Despite the changes in process, the public’s comments and suggestions remain relevant and will continue to shape the proposed revised plan and the alternatives.

Approximately 75 percent of the Lake Tahoe Basin is managed by the Forest Service. The LTBMU’s current plan is 20 years old.

South Tahoe High School Burger Night at the Red Hut on Ski Run Boulevard is April 30 from 5-7pm.

The event benefits the South Tahoe High School Performing Arts Booster Association.

Dinner includes a burger (veggie available) homemade chips, beverage and a sundae or root beer float.

The Douglas County Public Library is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express on May 1. At 10am National Pony Express, Nevada Division will present a lecture in the Lampe Park Pavilion.

Afterward there will be a mail bag exchange demonstration in Herbig Park. Write a letter to be carried by a Pony Express rider during the program and visit the horses before they ride. Pick up your letter immediately after the mail exchange demonstration. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult.

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce will host an Earth Day Business After Hours Mixer at Embassy Suites South Lake Tahoe on April 22 from 5:30–7:30pm.

Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus concert “Welcome Spring” is May 1 at 7 pm at the Resort at Squaw Creek in Squaw Valley.

This spring the chorus has prepared a program to please most any taste in music, including Gilbert and Sullivan comedy sketches, a jazz and show tune section, and some classic and contemporary literature.

The Diablo Valley Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Singers from the Bay Area are also on the program.
