The public is invited to learn about the Sierra Nevada Geotourism Project and get an insider’s view on how to submit a nomination, navigate the website, and learn how geotoursim benefits the community.
The workshop will be at the Emergency Operation Center, 1694 County Road, Minden at 5:30pm June 28.
A variety of project partners and residents of the Sierra Nevada are working together to create a National Geographic map that features geotouristic assets and attracts as well as encourages sustainable tourism. The Geotourism Project seeks to celebrate the Sierra Nevada as a world-class destination, while contributing to its economic health and promoting long-term stewardship of the region.
Geotouristic assets are authentic and distinctive to the region and sustain or enhance the geographic character of the Sierra Nevada. Examples include local restaurants and shops, historic hotels, museums, local artists, hiking trails, festivals and events, volunteer and recreational opportunities. The Douglas County Public Library in Zephyr Cove presents Fourth of July Stories and Crafts on July 2 at 1:30pm. Miss Carol will read stories celebrating Independence Day. The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club Annual Blessing of the Boats is June 27 at Camp Richardson Marina. The Club members will organize their boats in the Home Owner’s Cove of Tahoe Keys at 9:45am.
The boats will move onto the lake at about 10am and then proceed to the the Camp Richardson Marina for the “Blessing of the Boats” by club member the Ret. Rev. John Grace.
Members of the public who are interested in having their boats blessed are invited to join at the end of the line as it passes through the mouth of the Keys.
A Yacht Club Membership Drive is planned for 1-4pm at the Yacht Clubhouse located in the old boat house next to the Beacon restaurant.
This event is open to the boating public who may be interested in learning more about the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club and the many activities it offers to the members. Appetizers, soft drinks, coffee and tea will be provided.
The newly published recipe book created by the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club — “Our Favorite Recipes” — will be available for a $20 donation. Proceeds benefit CASA, Boy & Girls Club, and the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center.

Blood drive on June 26 from 7:30am-1:30pm at Tahoe Douglas Fire Department, Round Hill Station No. 3.
A business loan clinic will be conducted June 22 from 9:30am–12:30pm at Lake Tahoe Community College.
Lenders will be present that support SBA lending programs that include:
* Business loans for business owner occupied commercial real estate and business equipment
* $500 – $2 million businesses loans for existing businesses with historic repayment ability
* $500 – $250,000 businesses loans for existing businesses
* Unsecured loans up to $25,000 available
* Free technical assistance
* All owners must be present to apply
Loans for start-ups businesses (less than two years in operation) require the clients to receive business counseling from a technical assistance provider before approved loans are disbursed. The counseling is free. The Greater Sacramento Small Business Development Center, the Nevada Small Business Development Center and the Nevada Microenterprise Initiative will have representatives available to schedule counseling. The loan clinic is for existing businesses only.
Begin the day with “Secrets to Success: Blue Ribbon Winners Workshop” featuring Melodie Ulman of Freshies, Jana Spano of Sealed with a Kiss and Ashley Mattila of Marcus Ashley Galleries. The workshop will be before the loan clinic from 8–9:30am at the Lake Tahoe Community College, in the Creekside Room.

The El Dorado County School Boards Association and the El Dorado County Office of Education will conduct a workshop for prospective school board members on June 30 at the El Dorado County Office of Education. Registration is at 4:30pm, with the workshop taking place from 5-6:30pm.
The purpose of this workshop is to inform prospective school board members of the duties and responsibilities of school board members.
According to Vicki Barber, El Dorado County superintendent of schools, local board members and superintendents from various school districts will discuss topics such as time commitment, the Brown Act, policy development, budget responsibilities, and the general role that school boards have in public education today.
The election filing dates are between July 12 and Aug. 6.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra breakfast meeting on June 17 at 7:30am at the Lake Tahoe Senior Center in South Lake Tahoe features South Tahoe High School counselor Amy Jackson and her A Team.
In addition to being once named “Top Female Vocalist of the Year” by the Academy of Country Music, Wynonna has also been referred as “the greatest country singer since Patsy Cline” by Rolling Stone Magazine. And this year she is making history at the Lake Tahoe Music Festival by being the first country music performer in 28 years to join the festival lineup.
“An Evening with Wynonna” takes place at Northstar-At-Tahoe July 31 as part of the season’s 2010 three-week concert series July 22–Aug. 7.
Known as one of country music’s most popular and well-respected artists, Wynonna will share her intimate and charismatic stage show with festival attendees.
“Adding a country star to our concert series is a first for us but we wanted to do it right and Wynonna fits the bill perfectly,” Lisa Krueger, chief executive officer of the Lake Tahoe Music Festival, said in a press release. “In the past five years we’ve booked our concert lineup based on feedback from attendees and in our last annual survey a majority of respondents asked for country music and we listened. Wynonna’s a talented and industry-recognized sensation who goes beyond country, offering a diverse musical range that we’re certain our attendees will embrace.”
Ever since her record-breaking, quintuple platinum debut solo CD, 1992’s “Wynonna,” which reached No. 1 on the country chart and loomed in the top five of Billboard’s “Top Albums” chart, the singer has remained a recognizable, yet unpredictable icon. The festival also adds two “Strictly Classical” concerts July 21 and 28 featuring the premiere of the Orchestra Academy and guest soloists and Academy instructors Ariana Ghez, principal oboist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Jerry Grossman, principal cellist for the Metropolitan Opera.
