Squaw Valley is paying tribute to man’s and woman’s best friend when it hosts the inaugural Peaks and Paws event Sept. 18 from 11am to 5pm.

It’s a opportunity to sip wine or beer while playing with your pets and socializing with other dog owners.

Peaks and Paws will feature a dog training seminar, adopt-a-dog show, guided hikes and three hours of wine and beer tasting and live music from 2 to 5pm. Attendees can also visit a few premiere animal-themed arts & crafts booths.Pets are welcome, but must be well-behaved and on a leash.

Entrance to Peaks and Paws is free. Wine tasting is $25 per person and includes a commemorative wine glass. Beers are also available for $4 each. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe.

The Tahoe Mountain Sports 4th Annual Pro/Am Disc Golf Tournament takes to the North Tahoe Regional Park 18-hole disc golf course Oct. 9-10, bringing disc golf professionals and amateurs to compete at high elevation. The tournament, a PDGA Sanctioned “B” Pro/Am event, annually brings golfers from all over Northern California to the Tahoe Vista course, and has helped drive the Tahoe region’s growing interest in the sport of disc golf.

All levels are welcome. Pros are competing for cash prizes, and amateur winners will receive Tahoe Mountain Sports gift certificates to use at the Kings Beach store or at tahoemountainsports.com.

With three home bouts under their belts, the Tahoe Derby Dames will end their home season Sept. 18 when they play the Mountain Derby Girls from Sonora.

The final home bout for the Dames will again blend full-contact athletic roller derby action with philanthropy. A portion of the bout proceeds will go to support the St. Theresa Food Pantry, which recently announced its cupboards were bare.

The Dames will also have a canned food drive at the bout, providing a free raffle ticket for every two cans donated to the cause.As always, the bout will feature a beer garden, half-time show and a raffle, along with ample opportunity to cheer on your favorite derby girls.

Bout tickets are $10, and kids under 10 are free. Tickets can be purchased from any derby girl, at Brothers Bar & Grill, or at the event. Gates at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe open at 3pm and the roller derby bout kicks off at 4pm.
