South Lake Tahoe AAUW welcomes members, guests and the public on Nov. 13 at 10a, at the Aspen Room at Lake Tahoe Community College library to learn about the women who contributed to the passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote.

Storyteller and AAUW member Sherna Kopple Svensson will share a brief history of the suffragettes and the almost forgotten women who filled in for men fighting World War I.

Following her presentation, a multi-generational panel of women will discuss the changes brought about in their lifetime as women took a greater role in determining the course of their own lives.

The event is free and the public is welcome.

The North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Economic Development Corporation have partnered to offer Internet marketing classes for beginners and intermediate users Nov. 2, 9 and 16, 6-8:30pm at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach, 8318 North Lake Blvd.

The Nov. 2 class is for beginners and will teach participants how to get top rankings on Google, how to access free tools and pick the right keywords for their business and market locally. The cost is $45/person.

The Nov. 9 class is for Intermediates I and will focus on how to set up a Google Ad-words account to bid on keywords. The class will also cover strategies to building inbound links to businesses’ websites. The cost is $45/person.

The Nov. 16 class is for Intermediates II and attendees will learn how to create buzz and compelling content through social marketing, such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs. The second half of the class introduces participants to one of the most powerful tools to measure their websites. They’ll be able to learn where their visitors are coming from and how to improve their websites.

Coryon Redd, an entrepreneur who has grown an e-commerce business of cell phone batteries and accessories to more than $3 million in annual sales, will teach the classes that include search engine marketing, link building, comparison shopping and website development – a proven blueprint that will translate to more traffic and converting more shoppers into buyers at participants’ websites.

The death of a child is devastating and it’s important to the family the child always be remembered. That’s why members of the Northern Nevada/Carson City Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will participate Dec. 12 in the annual Worldwide Candle Lighting to honor the memories of all children, regardless of age, who have died.

The closest candle lighting that will be part of a special 7pm Dec. 12 service is at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1202 N. Saliman Road in Carson City and will feature music, readings, and poems.

Mountain bike riders from around the Lake Tahoe Basin will convene Nov. 5 from 6-8pm at South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Department, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., Cedar Room, to discuss how to proceed in forming a single regional club or a couple clubs representing each area in the basin.

Toccata — Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus — kicks off its 2010-11 Winter MusicFest with a program featuring selections from Handel’s Messiah along with many holiday favorites.

The North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Winter Recreation Luncheon on Nov. 10 at noon, with an 11:30am registration check-in, at the Olympic Village Lodge (formerly Olympic Village Inn), 1909 Chamonix Place in Olympic Valley.

This event is geared to provide insight about winter happenings, including events, festivals and activities, to frontline, front desk and concierge employees, along with business owners and managers. Attendees can give a brief presentation at the luncheon, as well as provide 80 brochures or other pieces of collateral to be distributed during the event.

This luncheon sells out, so early sign ups are recommended. Deadline to register is Nov. 5. Cost is $28/person for chamber members and $35/person for non-members and includes lunch.

Nevada State Parks invites the public to attend an exhibit of historic clothing from the Dangberg Home Ranch’s extensive collection. The exhibit will be during Nevada Day weekend and the first weekend in November.

The exhibit will feature clothing worn by three generations of the Dangberg family. Included are the 1898 wedding gown worn by Gertrude Dangberg, casual and formal clothing worn by Gertrude and her four daughters in the 1920s through the 1960s, and children’s clothing from the 1910s and 1930s worn by the daughters and Gertrude’s grandson, C. Stephen Achard Jr.

A highlight of the exhibit is the christening dress first worn in 1866 by Fred Dangberg Jr., that was recently donated to the park by Achard. Visitors will also see a range of men’s and women’s hats, shoes, jewelry and accessories from throughout the 20th century.

Harpist Anne Roos is having CD release party on Nov. 20 from 6:30-8:30pm at Harrah’s Tahoe in Stateline.

Entertainment will be provided by Screenbooth Lake Tahoe and JJ Entertainment, who will be playing tracks from Roos’ new recordings.

Roos is teaming up with Bread & Broth, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to feed the hungry in South Lake Tahoe. Gift baskets will be raffled off, with the proceeds going to help Bread & Broth provide Thanksgiving meals to those in need.
