Tahoe Cross Country in Tahoe City hosts a Yoga & Skate Ski Clinic on Feb. 7 at 9am, with yoga in the resort’s yurt, which is heated by a woodstove.
After yoga, a skate skiing class helps participants focus on what they learned about body alignment in the yoga class.
Class is limited to 20.
Pull out the stretch pants and skinny skis for Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe’s Slide Back Retro Ski Party Feb. 6, 9am-4pm.
Located just outside of Incline Village, ski officials are asking winter enthusiasts to break all of the laws of ski fashion and take part in the resort’s popular Fashion Contest to win up to $500 in modern gear from the Village Ski Loft.
Sierra-at-Tahoe offers Snowsports Day discounts. Tickets are discounted at just $35 (regular rate $69) for a full-day lift ticket for Sierra-at-Tahoe. Tickets are only valid during Snowsports Week Feb. 8-11.
Lift tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets will not be available at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

It will be a kids’ world at the Village at Squaw Valley when the resorts host Kid-O-Rama, a week filled with family friendly activities from Feb. 13-21.
The celebration includes everything from costumed skating parties to family ski racing to street parties and scavenger hunts.
The Kids’ Street Party at the Village at Squaw Valley’s Fountain Court on Feb. 17 is one of the highlights of the event. At the party there will be live entertainment by Todd Wees, face painting, candle making, hot cocoa, fairy blessings, the antics of a clown, and a bounce house from 2-4pm.

Feb. 13–21: Family ski racing will allow families to engage in a little friendly rivalry with either members of opposite clans or within their own family.
Feb. 13–20: Kid’s can hunt down cool treasures and prizes during a scavenger hunt.
Feb. 13: Dress the little ones in their cutest costumes and bring them to the Squaw Valley USA ice rink at the top of the tram for a costume skating party. Kids also can pose for photos with the Squaw Dogs, Squaw Valley’s adorable rescue dogs that are a crucial element to avalanche rescue.
Feb. 14: Kids and their families get creative by taking part in a poem contest at Wildflour Bakery. The bakery staff will write the poems on Valentine’s cookies.
Feb. 15: Kids and their families can participate in Beacon Basin Night, where they can use beacons to find each other and learn how the life-saving technology works in a fun, hide-and-seek-like fashion.
Feb. 16: A fire truck, snow plow and Snowcat will roll into The Village for kids to observe up close. Machine operators will be on hand to answer questions.
Feb. 17: Kids Street Party at The Village at Squaw Valley Fountain Court will feature live entertainment by Todd Wees, face painting, candle making, hot cocoa, fairy blessings, the antics of a clown and a bounce house from 2 to 4pm.
Feb. 18: Take the kids to the slopes for an evening of night tubing and enjoy a warm beverage at the hot chocolate party.
Feb. 19: Another opportunity to take the kids for a spin on the Squaw Valley USA ice rink during a costume skating party or enjoy another evening of tubing under the stars.
Fe. 20: Olympic Village Lodge hosts a special Kids Night. Families can also enjoy more night tubing.
Many of the events during the week are free. Holiday rates apply to events such as skating, tubing and racing. Tubing is $16 for an hour, skating is $11 for two hours, and Coin-Op Family Racing is $1 per run.

Dear Mr. Brown:
Happy New Year to you and county officials! I hope that the year is a good one for all of you. We have certainly had our challenges with a slow economy, and I know we all need to stay focused on ways to improve it in 2010.
I am writing to you in regard to the rumored and reported proposal to open and operate a “Strip Club” at the property near Stateline, Nevada, previously operated as Bill’s Casino. Individual members of the City Council and community members have voiced concerns regarding this proposed activity and its compatibility with existing and proposed businesses in the Stateline area.
Existing operators of businesses in the Stateline area have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to create a diverse venue of gaming, skiing, summer sports, and entertainment that is attractive to the millions of tourists that visit our communities for family-oriented fun and recreation. Great efforts are being made, with the support of the Nevada and California business community (through LTVA and the joint chamber), to promote family-oriented tourism to our communities, and I believe we are making progress in this regard in spite of a slower economy.
I do not claim to be an expert on strip clubs or adult-oriented businesses. I have heard and been told that strip clubs attract a certain clientele that are likely to be incompatible with existing business activity in the area, and it will detract from the family-oriented tourist trade we are seeking on both sides of the Stateline area. I am told as well that strip clubs may contribute to illegal activities that lead to the area becoming less attractive and less safe for local residents and visitors.
I understand and respect that the proposed location of a strip club is not in South Lake Tahoe or California and that the decision to permit such a use rests exclusively with Douglas County officials. I am respectfully asking that your office, other reviewing county departments, and county commissioners carefully evaluate the request and the possible adverse ramifications it could have on the existing Stateline business community and on proposed future development on both sides of the State line. Please ask yourself if this business activity adds to or detracts from the type of Stateline we want to have and create for the future?

The first Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival is scheduled for April 29 to May 2, and organizers are working to combine Carson Valley’s varied cultural heritage and history with music, poetry, performance and visual arts to create an event worthy of its location.
The festival will feature more than 50 performances in a variety of venues around Genoa during the four days as well as exhibits, vendors, workshops and of course, opportunities to enjoy beverages and dining. Participants in all of those areas, from well known musical and cowboy poetry performers to crafters, instructors and vendors are being pursued by the festival’s Program Committee and other committees, including Marketing & Publicity, Logistics, Education/Workshops, Finance, Visual Arts and Food are moving forward to put their elements in place.
