Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort would like to congratulate team athlete, Elena Hight, on her upcoming participation on the U.S. Women’s Snowboard Team as she heads to Vancouver to compete in the halfpipe event.

Hight, one of the nation’s top female riders, joined the Northstar Resort Professional Freestyle Team during the 2008-09 season and will represent the resort when she competes in Vancouver.

Hight, a South Lake Tahoe local, was the first female professional rider to join the Northstar Resort team, and was the youngest female snowboarder to compete in the 2006 Games in Turino, Italy, at age 16, where she placed sixth in halfpipe. She continues to be a top competitor in halfpipe competitions, and this season has placed first in the halfpipe competition at the Snowbasin Dew Tour and second in the Mammoth Grand Prix.

Helly Hansen’s renowned all-mountain competition returns to Squaw Valley Feb. 20.

In its second year, this unique competition challenges teams of skiers and riders to explore their favorite resort from top to bottom for a chance to win an all-expense-paid trip to the finals in Aspen/Snowmass.

The Squaw Big Mountain Battle is one of seven tour stops. At each stop, teams of two take on courses designed by Jeff McKitrick and Helly Hansen. Teams (ski, snowboard, or mixed) must complete each of the hikes. Flaik GPS devices will track the performance of each participant.

Teams can ski anywhere for extra points once they have completed the designated bowls. The top three teams to complete the hikes, course and checkpoints in the fastest times are awarded prizes. Teams can win in the following categories after completing the designated bowls: Fastest Hike, Most Vertical, Most Runs and Most Lift Rides. The team to finish with the most points wins a trip to Aspen/Snowmass to compete in the Big Mountain Battle Finals on March 28.

The event pre-registration entry fee is $75 per team and includes two Helly Hansen LIFA® base layers valued at $45 each. Online pre-registration closes Feb. 18 at midnight, and check-in will be from 8-9:30am at a location TBD. Entry is limited to the first 100 teams, and registration on the day of the event is available for $10 more per person. The awards ceremony kicks off at 1:30pm at the Chamois.

Is South Lake Tahoe about to redefine its boundaries? Will an elected mayor be the way the city is governed?

Kenny Curtzwiler who lives in Meyers and former South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Ted Long broached those topics. They both spoke at the Feb. 9 City Council meeting during public comments.

Councilman Jerry Birdwell at the end of the regular session got consensus from his colleagues to have an item on a future agenda that would help push the discussion forward. The idea is to have a community meeting to talk about possibly annexing portions of El Dorado County into the city limits as well as going from a general law city to a charter city.

“People who want to be annexed should do a grassroots (movement). Not the council,” Councilman Hal Cole said.

The council said it welcomes the discussion in a community meeting format, but does not want it to be at a council meeting.

Councilman Bill Crawford suggested Mayor Kathay Lovell attend the next Meyers Roundtable meeting to gauge what that group thinks of annexation.

He cautioned that it is expensive to become a charter city and that there are a lot of hoops to go through.

“Do we have the kind of people in this community who can give up their life or job for four years?” Crawford asked in reference to an elected mayor.

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra was on hand at Grace Hall of St Theresa Church on Monday to help Bread & Broth serve more 75 locals in need of a hot meal.

“This is what Kiwanis is all about – serving the community,” Kiwanian Tom Millham said in a press release.

In addition to donating $250 to sponsor the evening, Kiwanis volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help serve meals, clean up, and put away tables and chairs.
