Proceeds from the May 23 all-day car wash will help fund a trip to Los Angeles for members of South Lake Tahoe’s A Team.
The car wash will start at 8am across from the Swiss Chalet Village on Highway 50.
More than a dozen at-risk students whose grades and attendance meet the requirements will tour the Museum of Tolerance and Homeboy Industries.
Grants, service club, fund raisers and PAL are paying for the trip.

Summer Kickoff is for teenagers throughout the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. It will be at the ball fields at Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe on June 4 from 4-7pm.
It’s sponsored by all the agencies that are part of the Youth Task Force.
There will be a soccer tournament, open mic, urban art demonstration, food provided by Embassy Suites South Lake Tahoe, and more. Employers who have jobs for teens will be there.

Nevada road condition e-mail and text message alerts are now available through the Nevada Department of Transportation’s 511 travel information system.
Known as ClearPath 511, the alerts include tire and chain controls, wind advisories/prohibitions and full road closures due to incidents or weather on state roads.
To sign up, users simply log onto www.nvroads.com, select the “ClearPath” icon and register to receive reports for the state road segments of their choice. The alerts are free, excluding text message fees imposed by individual phone carriers.
Spring “Clean Up On the Run” Day on May 22 is from 9am-noon. This is the first cleanup day of its kind on Ski Run Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

Habitat for Humanity has a nationwide program that is organizing in South Lake Tahoe. “A Brush With Kindness” serves low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes.
The program provides exterior painting, minor repairs, and some landscape improvement. Volunteers are needed and invited to an information and sign up meeting May 19 at 6:30pm at Hope Lutheran Church, 930 Julie Lane, South Lake Tahoe.

A judge has denied a request by alleged kidnappers Phillip and Nancy Garrido to visit each other in jail, but he has agreed to allow them to speak to each other in a five-minute phone call this month and another in June.
An order from El Dorado Superior Court Judge Douglas C. Phimister said that he considered evidence presented at a closed April 15 hearing and was denying their visitation requests.

As the only ski and snowboard resort still open at Lake Tahoe, Alpine Meadows Ski Resort will offer $25 all-day adult lift tickets to any guest with a 2009-10 season pass from any other mountain May 14-16 -– the mountain’s final weekend of the ski season.
Guests simply present their 2009-10 season pass at the ticket window to save (limit one ticket per day, per passholder).
With top-to-bottom skiing and riding via Summit Six Express, a mid mountain snowpack of more than 12 feet, and fresh snow this week, Alpine Meadows’ legendary snow is guaranteed to live up to its reputation for offering world-class terrain.

Funky Miracle will perform from the Alpine Meadows Bandwagon from noon to 3pm in the base area May 15; and Subjek 2 Change will jam for the ski and snowboard season finale May 16.
Annual Mad Cow Downhill
An annual cult favorite, the Mad Cow Downhill beckons all speed lovin’ skiers and snowboarders to wax up their downhill gear for this annual top-to-bottom race. A mass start for one ski division and one snowboard division will be heard by all when the Alpine Meadows ski patrol detonates an avalanche charge to signify the start. Racers can choose whichever descent route they deem fastest from the top of the Summit Six chair all the way to the base lodge. The skier and snowboarder to reach the finish first snag a 2010-11 Midweek Plus Sunday season pass which will hang from the finish line arch. Start time is 2pm.
Entry for the Annual Mad Cow Downhill is free and will take place on the base lodge sun deck. Helmets are required.

A petition to recall two board members of the Fallen Leaf Lake Community Services District has been certified, the El Dorado County Elections Department confirmed Tuesday.
The filing targets President Mike Kraft and board member Eric Thaden for what a disgruntled group of Fallen Leaf Lake citizens labels an “unresponsiveness” to their constituencies. A dispute over the ouster of longtime store and marina operator John and Ruth Rich has spurred controversy for nearly a year. The board has since chosen a new concessionaire, with Rob and Sandy Wirth planning to get the hub of the village outside South Lake Tahoe running by Memorial Day weekend.
Petitioners collected more than the necessary 48 signatures – 30 percent of the registered voters in the district. Residents will pay for the election. The board will meet Saturday at 11am in the Fallen Leaf Lake Fire Station at 241 Fallen Leaf Lake Road. The board is expected to call the election and has two weeks to set the date, or the Elections Department will do it for the board.
An Aug. 31 election has already been set to replace the seat vacated by former President Dana Clark, who cited the negativity of the concessionaire issue as his reason for leaving.
Also on the agenda for Saturday’s meeting is an update by interim General Manager Tom Barnes on upgrades to the store and marina; a progress report from the Wirths on their preparations; the continuation of the special fire district tax; and a discussion of an emergency plan for the village.
