Applicants are being sought among Nevada high school seniors for the annual $1,000 June Stannard Memorial Scholarship to pursue a college degree that will lead to a career in the tourism industry.
The scholarship was created in 2008 to honor the memory of June Stannard, a longtime operations manager for the Winnemucca Convention Center and avid supporter of Nevada’s tourism industry
Deadline for submitting applications is March 11 and the forms and instructions are online at www.cowboycountry.org. The Cowboy Country Territory Advisory Committee, which manages the scholarship program, promotes tourism for northeastern Nevada and is affiliated with the Nevada Commission on Tourism.
To be eligible, an applicant must be a Nevada resident and high school senior graduating in June who has chosen to seek a degree in the hospitality, travel or other tourism-related industry at an accredited college or university. The scholarship is intended to be used for academic purposes such as tuition, educational fees, room, board or books.
Applicants must describe in 500 words or less their reasons for pursuing studies in the hospitality, travel and tourism industry. The winner will be announced April 7 following the annual awards dinner at NCOT’s Rural Roundup conference, this year at the CasaBlanca Resort & Casino in Mesquite. The scholarship program will cover expenses for the winner and one chaperon to attend the dinner.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona continues in critical condition, a lack of change that is a good sign, hospital officials said on Monday. In Washington, President Obama led the nation in mourning for the victims of the Tucson shooting rampage that left six dead and 14 injured.
Giffords is one of two people who remain in the intensive-care unit at University Medical Center, doctors said at a televised news conference. Two patients from Saturday’s shooting have been discharged, and five are listed in serious condition.
Jared Lee Loughner, who has been in custody since the Saturday morning shooting outside a Tucson supermarket where Giffords was greeting constituents, is scheduled to appear in federal court in the early afternoon. Loughner, 22, faces five counts of murder and attempted murder of federal employees.
Investigators have said that Giffords, 40, was Loughner’s principal target. She was wounded in the head and remained in critical condition after surgery designed to relieve the danger of damage from swelling of the brain.
“At this phase in the game, no change is good, and we have no change,” said Dr. Michael Lemole Jr., chief of the division of neurosurgery. “She is still following those basic commands, and on top of that, the CAT scans are showing that there is no progression of the swelling.

When Jared Loughner faces a judge in federal court in Phoenix this afternoon, he will be accompanied by the same high-powered defense attorney who represented the “Unabomber,” the Atlanta Olympics bomber and Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who drowned her two children by driving her car into a lake.
The Federal Public Defender’s Office in Phoenix has recommended that San Diego attorney Judy Clarke take Loughner’s case.
She will appear with him at his initial court appearance and ask to be appointed as Loughner’s attorney.
Loughner, 22, has been charged with five federal felonies: the attempted murders of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and two of her staffers, and the murders of U.S. District Judge John Roll and Giffords aide Gabriel Zimmerman.
Loughner could face the death penalty, although that decision has not yet been reached.
Moonie is a nice older Lab-terrier mix who is 8 years old. She has lived with small children and other dogs, though she does like to be in charge and would like to meet your dogs before she can go home.
Her last owners let her roam the streets and never claimed her when she came to the shelter.
Moonie is still very energetic and would make a good pet for an active household.
Moonie is spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated.
She is at the El Dorado County Animal Services shelter in Meyers, along with many other dogs and cats who are waiting for their new homes.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki plans to request setting aside a portion of the state’s unclaimed property fund during the upcoming legislative session to help seed companies and boost economic development in Nevada.
Krolicki said the move fits well with Gov. Brian Sandoval’s goal of making economic development the No. 1 priority of his administration. Krolicki, who serves as the chairman of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, talked about the proposal and other economic development-related issues during a meeting with the Reno Gazette-Journal editorial board.
“It’s a little premature to go into details and dollars at this point,” Krolicki said. “But we will introduce a bill draft request that seeks to use unclaimed property as a funding source for economic development matters.”
The Nevada Unclaimed Property Division currently oversees more than $400 million in unclaimed property. Under Krolicki’s proposal, $5 million, for example, could be set aside annually from the unclaimed property fund and used as economic development bonds. The funds generated through those bonds can then be used as startup money or to help seed businesses and attract companies to the state. The funds also can be invested to grow even further.
Representatives from TripAdvisor will give a presentation at this month’s South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association meeting.
The meeting is Jan. 13 at 9:30am at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority office in Stateline.
The discussion will be about the website and tools to help businesses leverage their exposure.
