The Bringing Art To Schools Program recently had an end of year art show in conjunction with South Lake Tahoe elementary school open house.

Trained volunteers attempt to provide the opportunity to explore a variety of different art materials ranging from chalk, crayon, marker, cut paper, printmaking, clay, watercolor and even 3-D sculpture. Guest artists are recruited from the community to provide additional lessons when possible.

The BATS volunteers wish to thank all the dedicated teachers and eager students who helped to make the program so successful.

The 22nd annual Lake in the Sky Air Show takes flight Aug. 27 from 7am-4pm.

It features some of the world’s top aircraft performers. as well as radio-controlled demonstrations, Navy H-60 Seahawk helicopters and an Air Force C-17 Globemaster static display.

Flying legends Bill Cornick, former Air Force pilot; Jon Melby, 33-year freestyle aerobatic air show pilot; and Spencer Suderman, known for intense gyroscopic maneuvers on the Pitts S-2B Biplane, will entertain spectators with aerial stunts and demonstrations.

Pre-opening events include a 5K race/Kids Fun Run and a Kiwanis pancake breakfast.

The Lake Tahoe Paddle Festival is a solstice celebration of human powered watercraft featuring “Ancient Art to State of the Art” boats, boards and paddles.

The focus is the preservation of indigenous watercraft art and culture.

The paddle race through Emerald Bay starts in Meeks Bay on June 18 at 8am.

Interpretive exhibits will highlight sustainable recreation, healthy foods, yoga, healing arts and environmental awareness.

It is a weekend of workshops, clinics, fun, food and family entertainment. Try out the world’s fastest growing sport — standup paddling — on a demo, or paddle your canoe or kayak over to learn more about protecting Lake Tahoe’s clarity and efforts to prevent the proliferation of invasive species.

More than 20 local Tahoe Douglas Rotarians donated time and hard work at the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club on April 30 as part of Rotarians At Work Day.

The Rotarians were joined by six kids and parents to build a stage, paint walls and cabinets, and remove broken mirrors.

Rotarians At Work Day is the last Saturday in April each year where clubs around the world identify a hands-on project that all members can participate in to help their local community. Tahoe Douglas Rotary selected to work with the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe to give back to the South Shore community and to use the project to model community service behavior for younger generations.

As part of the Valhalla Arts, Music, and Theatre Festival, the Tahoe Tallac Association and 5th Age productions present the comedy “The Dixie Swim Club” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten at the Boathouse Theatre, July 7-9, July 14-16 at 8pm and July 10 and July 17 at 2pm.

Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each others lives.

As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges (men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce, aging) that life flings at them. And when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives in the second act, these friends, proving the enduring power of “teamwork,” rally around their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction. “The Dixie Swim Club” is a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever.

The cast includes: Diana Arrington Evans, Ginger Nicolay Davis, Ann Swallow, Teri Levy and Amy Sando.

The production is directed by David Hamilton with Dave Anderson doing set design and technical direction.

As lawyers prepare for Thursday’s sentencing of Phillip and Nancy Garrido in the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard, questions remain concerning his parole supervision during the time that she was abducted, raped and gave birth to two daughters fathered by her captor.

Documents acquired exclusively by the Reno Gazette-Journal through a federal lawsuit reveal that the officials handling his case from the very beginning were by all accounts fooled.

Fireworks are shot off from a barge near the state line in South Lake Tahoe on July 4 starting about 9:45pm. The time can change.

To watch them from a beach, arrive early.

El Dorado Beach is currently under construction for Lakeview Commons and will not be available to view the fireworks.

* Ski Run Marina and beach

* Paddle-wheeler boats

* Tallac Historic site and any of the beaches along Emerald Bay Road

* Camp Richardson, Pope and Baldwin beaches
