Susan Adams, a 60-year-old former South Lake Tahoe resident, passed away in Buffalo, Wyo., June 16.

Funeral services will be at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe on June 24 at 11am.

Susan Elaine Adams was born July 28, 1950, in Fort Collins, Colo., to Ruth and Bill Jordan. She was the third child of five girls and one boy.

Her family spent most of her childhood in Brawley, Calif., where she graduated from high school.

As a young adult, Susan hoped to be a school teacher or writer and went to community college in California. During that time she met her husband, Robert Adams. Susan went on to raise their two children, Jessica and Ryan, as a single parent in California, eventually settling in her beloved city of South Lake Tahoe. There Susan fell in love with her longtime sweetheart David “Chas” Blake.

Susan ran a local business; Tahoe Keys Sub and Yogurt. After David’s retirement, Susan joined him in establishing their home in Buffalo, Wyo, where they established friendships, set up a hunting camp, grew vegetables, made jewelry and enjoyed her four grandchildren, Ella, Aaralyn, Katrin and Daylan.

Susan is survived by her four sisters, Kathy Lines, Sandy Carter, Billie Bernard and Jill Merriman; her brother Hank Jordan; her two children Jessica Wilson and Ryan Adams; and her four grandchildren Ella Wilson, Aaralyn Adams, Katrin Wilson and Daylan Adams.

Her sense of spirituality, adventure, love and care will be dearly missed by them all.

The Carson Valley Chamber and Visitors Authority and Bike the West’s 4th Annual Tour of the Carson Valley – Barbecue & Ice Social is June 26. It starts and finishes at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa.

This is a kick-off to summer and a celebration of the cycling culture and more of a social event, as all types of pedal powered cycles are invited to participate. From unicycles to three-wheeled recumbents, retro road bikes, high wheelers, custom bikes, cruisers and more.

There are three non-competitive tour options including an 11-mile Family Fun Ride; a 20-mile Bike and Hike Option with the Carson Valley Trails Association; and a 44-mile Tour along the foothill of the Sierra, retracing the historic routes of pioneers, wagon trains and the Pony Express up to Woodfords Station and around Diamond Valley.

The Tour of the Carson is from noon-8pm at the Holiday Inn Express in Minden at the junction of Highway 395 and Highway 88. Bike Habitat will provide bicycle safety checks and technical support for the event. The ride starts between 8:30 and 9:30am.

If you’ve heeded the health messages to protect your skin by covering up and slathering on the sunblock, you’re taking important steps to playing it safe in the sun.

But you’ll come up short if you don’t also wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays, health experts say.

“Most people are not aware that long-term exposure to sunlight, with its ultraviolet wavelengths, can be very damaging to the eyes,” says Lee Duffner, an ophthalmologist in Hollywood, Fla., and spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Although there’s considerable public awareness about UV light’s ability to burn and age the skin, awareness of its effect on the eyes has “fallen in the shadows,” says optometry professor Jan Bergmanson of the University of Houston College of Optometry, founding director of the Texas Eye Research and Technology Center.

A 2009 survey by the American Optometric Association found that one in three adults are unaware of the eye health risks of spending too much time in the sun without proper protection.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s public approval rating remains positive, but enthusiasm for re-electing her is far less than in previous years, according to a Field Poll released today.

As Feinstein prepares to run for re-election next year, California voters are inclined to support her, 43 percent to 39 percent, according to the poll.

That four-point margin – the same as Feinstein posted in a Field Poll earlier this year – is her smallest ever in a pre-election year. First elected to the Senate in 1992, her margins of pre-election year support ranged from 19 percentage points to 29 percentage points before, the poll said.

Yet Feinstein’s public approval rating remains favorable, with 46 percent of voters approving of the job she is doing, according to the poll. Thirty-one percent disapprove, and 23 percent have no opinion.

The Washoe County sheriff’s coroner expects today to have a positive ID on the female body found near Marlette Lake on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Deputies had been looking for Kelly McGinness, who has been missing since Saturday. They are not saying this is McGinness.

Deputies said there is no sign of foul play.
