This last weekend, the South Lake Tahoe AAA Little League had one of the rarest feats in baseball occur. More rare than a no hitter. More rare than a perfect game.

Little Leaguer Jean Patrick Datoc on the Colorado Rockies fielded not just a triple play, an unassisted triple play.

According to Wikipedia, “in baseball an unassisted triple play occurs when a defensive player makes all three outs by himself in one continuous play” without his teammates making any assists.

There have only been 15 such plays in Major League Baseball since 1909.

Datoc pulled his off by fielding a fly ball, tagging the second base runner heading to third, and then tagged third base before that runner could get back to third.

If your kids are interested in playing Little League, sign them up or get more information online. Cheryl Orr, president of South Lake Tahoe Little League, does an incredible job at keeping our league organized and informed during all this crazy weather causing delays and cancellations.

By Anjeanette Damon, Reno Gazette-Journal

Immigration enforcement agents have arrested 87 immigrants in Reno and Las Vegas during a five-day operation they said targeted individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

Of those arrested, 22 were picked up in Reno, including a 33-year-old Mexican national with prior drug trafficking, DUI and domestic violence convictions and a 19-year-old Mexican national with a prior conviction for robbery and resisting arrest.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, however, refused to release the identifications of those arrested, citing Privacy Act restrictions on “administrative arrests.”

Over 50 people came out to clean up, garden, paint stencils, install a buddy bench and basketball hoop, as well as install new signage from the Take Care campaign. The Take Care campaign was created to encourage people to take care of the environment. It is a Tahoewide campaign developed by the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee.

Thank you to all the volunteers and the Bijou PTA and Meeks for helping cover the costs of these projects.

Also, a special shoutout to Melissa and Ernie Bornstein who donated the new Buddy Bench. We are lucky that are children are at such a wonderful community school where the whole community steps up constantly.

Thanks,

Kathy Haven, parent

USFS to sell firewood permits

Firewood permits from the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit go on sale May 23.

They will be available at the Forest Supervisor’s Office at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe on starting Monday and at the North Shore office at 855 Alder Ave. in Incline Village on May 25.  Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Permits should be purchased early and wood collected promptly as fire restrictions are likely to go into effect early and there may be days when no cutting is allowed.

Permits have specific conditions and complete information is provided when the permit is issued.  Maps to designated cutting areas are provided and must be in the permit holder’s possession along with the valid permit.

The permit is for collection of “down-dead” wood up to a 30-inch maximum diameter in designated fuelwood areas within the Lake Tahoe Basin. “Down-dead” means the tree is down on the ground and dead, rather than dead and standing.

Can Congress pass a California water bill?

By Michael Doyle, Sacramento Bee

California’s two Democratic senators remain somewhat out of sync over proposed water legislation, underscoring its ambiguous future on the eve of a big hearing.

Four months after Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s introduction of her latest California water package, Sen. Barbara Boxer is still evaluating the 185-page bill. Her wait-and-see attitude hints at complex undercurrents, as she supports some parts of Feinstein’s bill while seeking more feedback about other parts.

“I think many of us feel the same way as Sen. Boxer,” said Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael. “We appreciate that Sen. Feinstein has reached out and taken some new ideas that she’s rolled into that bill . . . but it still contains this very problematic Delta operations piece.”

Feinstein’s legislation will be one of five Western water bills considered today by the Senate Water and Power Subcommittee. It’s the first Senate hearing since last October on a drought-inspired California water bill.

Nevada GOP critical of Sandoval, taxes

By Seth A. Richardson, Reno Gazette-Journal

Gov. Brian Sandoval’s education tax plan was front and center at the Nevada Republican Party state convention on Sunday as lawmakers passed a resolution denouncing him and like-minded lawmakers for passing the tax.

More than 1,000 delegates showed up to the second day of the convention. The body passed a resolution rebuking the governor, a Republican, as well as other lawmakers who voted for the Commerce Tax during the 2015 Legislature. The resolution originally contained language only honoring those who worked against the tax plan, but was amended to include the denouncement.

Chairman Michael McDonald said while he didn’t necessarily agree with the castigation, it was fully within the convention body’s right to do so.
