Pot may increase risk for heart attacks

By Melissa Healy, Los Angeles Times

Over a five-year period, a government-mandated tracking system in France showed that physicians in that country treated 1,979 patients for serious health problems associated with the use of marijuana, and nearly 2 percent of those encounters were with patients suffering from cardiovascular problems, including heart attack, cardiac arrhythmia and stroke, and circulation problems in the arms and legs. In roughly a quarter of those cases, the study found, the patient died.

In the United States, when young and otherwise healthy patients show up in emergency departments with symptoms of heart attack, stroke, cardiomyopathy and cardiac arrhythmia, physicians have frequently noted in case reports that these unusual patients are regular marijuana users.

Such reporting is hardly the basis for declaring marijuana use an outright cause of cardiovascular disease. But last month, cardiologists writing in the Journal of the American Heart Association warned that “clinical evidence … suggests the potential for serious cardiovascular risks associated with marijuana use.” And with a growing movement to decriminalize marijuana use, they called for data-collection efforts capable of detecting and measuring marijuana’s cardiovascular impact among American users of cannibis setiva.

the results of this study don’t lead to any conclusion. I’m in favor of MJ being used to develop medicine to treat some diseases but I’m against the current system of creating distributors outside the normal pharmacy system. If it’s a medicine, we already have controls in place for prescriptions. We don’t need a separate set of drug stores.

So you support the current state of the pharmaceutical industry? The one that over prescribes opiates and unfairly inflates the cost of medicine?
Get real. Marijuana is in direct competition with them in its current natural form. They can’t improve on it, people can produce it outside of their corrupt industry. Marijuana laws are based on racism and crony capitalism.

it is not the users that get heart attacks

“The U.S. holds a patent [on marijuana] on one hand, and on the other hand, same government says it has no medical applications. Journalists are trained to hate hypocrisy. This is hypocrisy. I’ve never seen it quite like this.”
    –Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN

The U.S. patent states that CBD, a major component of cannabis, reduces heart attacks and strokes by up to 50%.

    Good thing alcohol doesn’t cause-
Neurological problems, including dementia, stroke and neuropathy.
Cardiovascular problems, including myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation and hypertension.
Psychiatric problems, including depression, anxiety, and suicide.
Social problems, including unemployment, lost productivity, and family problems.
Cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast. In general, the risk of cancer increases with increasing amounts of alcohol.
    Liver diseases, including—
    Alcoholic hepatitis.
Cirrhosis, which is among the leading causes of all deaths in the United States.
Among persons with Hepatitis C virus, worsening of liver function and interference with medications used to treat this condition.
Other gastrointestinal problems, including pancreatitis and gastritis.
    Right from the CDC website.

What a joke, exactly what in this story provoked you to mention alcohol? The story isn’t about alcohol, it is not related to alcohol. In fact there is no mention of alcohol.

I bring up alcohol because this is more of a smear campaign against legalization. There are other thing out there with far greater risks.

“In the United States, when young and otherwise healthy patients show up in emergency departments with symptoms of heart attack, stroke, cardiomyopathy and cardiac arrhythmia, physicians have frequently noted in case reports that these unusual patients are regular marijuana users.”

So none of these young people drink redbulls and rockstars? Sounds to me like pot users also over use caffeine…

I have a good friend who had a heart attack ten or more years ago when he was forty. He had never been overweight and rarely drank alcohol.

He smoked cigarettes and pot (a lot). The doctors told him the nicotine and the thc gave the cholesterol something to bind with.

I had never heard this theory before of after that incident.

From PubMed, 2013- “CONCLUSION: A single ultra low dose of THC before ischemia is a safe and effective treatment that reduces myocardial ischemic damage.” from “An ultra-low dose of tetrahydrocannabinol provides cardioprotection”

Cannabidiol is the #2 compound in cannabis-“Lab Notes: Pot Has Benefits for Diabetic Hearts” (Med Page Today)”Collectively, our results strongly suggest that cannabidiol may have tremendous therapeutic potential in the treatment of diabetic cardiovascular and other complications,”

“Cannabidiol as an anti-arrhythmic, the role of the CB1 receptors”(PubMed) and “Cannabidiol Attenuates Myocardial Dysfunction, Fibrosis, Inflammation, Cell Death and Interrelated Signaling Pathways Associated With Diabetic Cardiomyopathy” (ahajournanals).

You know smoking ANYTHING, tobacco, cannabis, parsley or mullen, raises the risk of heart attack just due to the rise in CO2 and CO in the blood. This article is just another bunch of junk science!
