· South Shore bike paths and sidewalks built this construction season are nearly ready to ride. Watch for the opening of: South Tahoe Greenway Herbert to Glenwood; Nevada Stateline to Stateline Bikeway, Laura Drive segment; Sawmill Boulevard Bike Trail and Al Tahoe sidewalk.
· At this month’s Tahoe Talk, learn about Safe Routes to Schools, Bike to School Week, the Bijou Bike Park, and other opportunities for kids to gain safe biking skills. This talk will include a preview tour of the new bike park. The talk is Sept. 16 from noon-1:30pm at the Pavilion at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe.
· South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club is having a social Sept. 12 from 5-8pm at the clubhouse, 2435 Venice Drive. Bring a Mexican dish to share. Non-members are welcome.
· North Lake Tahoe Resort Association has hired Sarah Winters as the leisure sales director.
· Richard Solbrig, general manager of the South Tahoe Public Utilities District, will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of South Lake on Sept. 9 at noon at Harveys. The public is invited.
Bike trails are open all right. Only this morning, once again, I had bikes run the stop signs on the trail crossing Arapahoe without even glancing at traffic. Rode right in front of me. Yesterday, a kid on a bike ran a light in front of us on Pioneer and 50. It must be awesome to be bulletproof.
I call them “Kamikaze bicyclists’.
Then they get mad and flip off the cars. Once people get on 2 wheels all common sense disappears.

Yep Liberule, all those criminals/tweekers/idiots are only accounting for $133 BILLION in tourism dollars in the US every year, and that number is growing rapidly!
Bicyclists come out of the womb telling the doctor how much money they spend.
People spend a lot of money on sports cars too. Doesn’t mean they own the road!
Folks, go sit at North Upper Truckee and Lake Tahoe Blvd and tell me how many cars actually come to a legal stop – that’s right almost none, and quite a few cars roll through at 10 to 20mph.
Tell me how many drivers around here drive the speed limit – damn few.

Rick, does your comment attempt to excuse those bicyclists who do not follow the law and endanger themselves and others? I cited two examples within two days of dangerous behavior, you cite generalities where no dangerous situation was created. I think there are significant differences.
As regards the bike trail crossings on Highway 50 westbound from the golf course to Apache: I have never seen any bicyclist stop at any of the stop signs, ever. And there are several, past Country Club, past Arapahoe, past Santa Fe, past Meeks Lumber, past the Chevron Station, etc. We walk that path almost daily and watch bicyclists run the stop signs and, as reported by others, flip off the cars that dare to take their rightful right of way. This behavior has caused significant changes in the attitude of motorists towards bicyclists. I find it odd that your only response is to point out motorists’ behavior at an obscure and isolated intersection. Further, bicycles NEVER even slow down at North Upper Truckee and Lake Tahoe Blvd. I think that there is room for improvement. Don’t you?

Installation of the stop signs at 15th and Eloise actually made the intersection more dangerous, as bicyclists now simply ride through the intersection whereas they used to be forced to stop when there was traffic.
Yeah bike riders are the WORST.

No, I am not excusing cyclist who do not obey the laws. But, 1) most cyclist also drive cars and 2) cars are more dangerous and break more laws then cyclist, and when they make mistakes, that often take out others then then themselves. I ride a few thousand miles a year and I just turned over 148,000 miles on my 2011 Audi. I do both. So before folks who only drive and do not ride get all high and mighty, they should take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror as they create more injury and mayhem then do cyclists. I suggest both drive and ride respectfully. When I see you harangue drivers with equal gusto, then I will consider you fair minded – until such time not.

For relevant numbers, try deaths per bike ride and deaths per car ride. And don’t forget to include all passengers.
Thank you for your kind words. Except there weren’t any. I made no assumptions, but you assumed my behavior. You have absolutely no idea what I do. I have, however, through paying attention when I drive, kept from hitting bicyclists despite their bad behavior. Keep up the good work in trying to excuse bicyclists’ bad behavior, it is helping a lot. There is nothing quite like a smug and self-assured bicyclist. Maybe I should change my behavior and become more like you guys, and stop paying attention and just be smugly arrogant about my misbehavior. So what if a bicyclist dies?
Rather than acknowledge the bad behavior I mentioned, you simply say that the other guy (cars) do it too. I stopped using that sort of logic about 60 years ago.
